Jonathan Frakes: "TATV an unpleasent memory"

Thanks a lot for the link. A very entertaining read! Mr. Frakes sounds like a great guy.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was under the impression that early on, when The Valentine first came out, that Frakes was thrilled to do TATV. Happy to hear that he felt differently (or feels differently now).

Glad to see he thinks pretty much the same way the fanbase does. Frakes has always been a very nice and standup kinda guy and I'm happy he vents himself like this from time to time.

Not to belittle the JF lovers here, but nobody forced him to do TATV. If he really had a problem with it from the get-go, why did he do it (besides the obvious monetary reason and working again with Sirtis)?

If I had to guess, I'd think that he was just fine with doing it at the time, just like Berman and Braga really thought they were doing something nice for Trek fans at the time, and only in retrospect, like B&B, is he stating that it was a bad idea.

It was his last chance to play Riker, the role that made him. Passing up on something like that isn't a small feat. I don't resent him one bit.

Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed Roswell for the most part and was amused when he made an appearance as himself in it...several times, once as the director of a Star Trek Enterprise episode.

Another possibility:

Braga or Berman called him up and pitched the idea of coming aboard as a "valentine to the fans" to him. It sounded good over the phone. Having known these guys for years, owing much of his career success to Berman, he agrees and signs the contract to guest star.

Then he gets the script and realizes that it just doesn't work the way Berman and Braga wanted it to work, and that it in fact inadvertently ends up disrespecting the ENT cast and their work. But it's too late to back out, because he already signed the contract.

If you sign a contract, you don't really have a choice. You've got to do it. Otherwise, you face both monetary consequences from the studio, and penalties from the Screen Actor's Guild.

Yep. This has pretty much been my personal take on the matter for six years now. Frakes thought it was a good idea at first and jumped at the chance and the money being offered to reprise his role of Riker, but after he and Marina got the script they saw its plethora of flaws and abject B.S. and couldn't back out because they'd already signed the contract to do the finale. So he soldiered on as best he could with the dreck he was given.

I'm pretty sure that for most projects in film and TV, when you get approached something, there's a difference between something sounding good and the final product. Heck, a lot can change even between filming and the release. For that I don't begrudge most people for taking on shitty projects because, hey, how can you tell it's shitty when you sign on?

There's a "15-year-old pussy" joke in there that *I* for one am not touching.
