Jon Voight joins 24 in prequel/season 7

In his first series role in 40 years, Jon Voight has signed on for the
upcoming seventh season of "24."

On the Emmy-winning Fox drama, Voight will play Jack Bauer's (Kiefer
Sutherland) uber-nemesis who is pulling the strings behind next
season's terrorist threat.

The character will be introduced during "24's" two-hour Season 7
prequel and will be featured heavily in the latter half of the season.
The prequel, now shooting on location in South Africa, is slated to
air Nov. 23, with Season 7 of the Imagine TV/20th TV-produced series
kicking off in January.

I hate prequels and I don't even watch 24. They're getting old.

It's just a prequel to season 7. They're only doing it because the writers strike delayed 24 for a whole season. It's really just giving the fans an extra treat for not having the show on for a year. It's just to set up season 7.

So the bad guy isn't
Tony Almeida
after all, then?

Maybe, maybe not. Voight is playing the head baddie.Tony could still be bad and working for Voight's character.

It's obviously a SPOILER that there will be an antagonistic character in the season! Who needed to know that!! Dammit, up until now I had just assumed Jack would be chilling out all season.

Well this should make the "why can't the bad guy be white" posters on this board (you know who you are) happy if the bad guy shown in the all the commercials turns out not to be the head honcho.

Ach! Spoilers! :scream:

What spoilers? There's nothing in this thread that qualifies as a spoiler that hasn't been coded.
Sorry, but I just find it funny that the wrong bit's being coded! Anyone who's seen the trailer knows that Tony's going to be the baddie. The spoiler for me was that Tony won't be the head baddie, it'll be the character Voight's gonna play.

Sure, in every season of 24 so far we've had a baddie and then found out that they're actually working for an even bigger baddie, but I wasn't expecting that this season, mainly because it's Tony fucking Almeida.

I still hope for a 24 where there *are* no baddies. How about a natural disaster, like a tornado, and its effects on LA? I realize that CTU, in and of itself, wouldn't be involved with such a thing, but AFAIK there is no CTU in Season 7 anyway.

The preview for season seven was funny, pointing out how there was no more CTU and things will be like you've never seen before -- and then you promptly have Jack saying there's a mole in the FBI and his new partner okays his torturing of a bad guy.

I would think smaller stakes would work on 24. After watching The Kill Point, how about a bank robbery turned hostage situation? If the writers are that hard-up to come up with a full storyline, eventually the bad guys can get away and the final few hours will be the chase and final confrontation.

I also wish they weren't so quick to resolve certain plots during one season (while throwing out loose ends and cliffhangers which ultimately get glossed over during the following season). For example, making Logan the bad guy was clearly something they pulled out of their asses and which contradicted much of early season five. That aside, what if the final cliffhanger of season five was revealing that Logan was the bad guy? And if he's still in office for season seven, maybe Tony being a bad guy is actually his way of bringing down Logan.

Hell, what was the point of Daniels' storyline and character arc last year if you're just going to jettison him and bring in President No. 15 for next season?

What year is it now on this show, anyway? The way they keep shooting forward in time, it must be about 2020. Are we going to see Avery Brooks complain about the lack of flying cars?

^^^

I think there was some props in season 6 that indicated it was 2012.

For example, making Logan the bad guy was clearly something they pulled out of their asses and which contradicted much of early season five.

I think they decided to make Logan the bad guy around the 6th episode of season 5. They didn't decide to make Nina a mole until episode 20 IIRC. I remember reading that they wrap up plot threads when they get bored with that particular plot or they run out of ideas for it. They just make it all up by the seat of their pants. This upcoming season they actually mapped out the whole season ahead of time. I think they did that because the writers strike delaying the season gave them lots of time to do so. And they wanted to try to make t better than last season.

Interesting that they're using this prequel to ret-con this character into the mix of season seven (since 1/3 of the season was finished pre-strike). Better than having a big bad just appear out of nowhere when the early, lower-level baddies have served their purpose.

That's a big problem I have -- why DON'T they map out the entire season? They know they'll get to air them all and they won't be canceled in the middle of the season. When they're all over the place and making stuff up as they go along, it's obvious, especially when things don't add up or contradict themselves.

Look at season one. The first 13 episodes were all planned out in detail with a resolution in case the show didn't survive and it's significantly better than the back 11.

Maybe it's just more fun for the writers to make it up on the fly. Some writers like to make it up as they go and some writers like to plan it out.

I find myself hoping that Tony will either be working undercover of sorts, or will have an epiphany at the end of the 'day' and will try to reform himself. The concept of Tony *really* being evil, is something I would prefer they not do. :(

I reckon Jon Voight will play the father of Mike Doyle (Rick Schroder's character) and the last scene will be of Doyle standing over his body, going 'Champ, Champ!'

Or maybe not.

I wouldn't even call it a prequel, it's just the first part of season 7, an extra episode if you will.
