Joker Origin Story Announced

True--most are not exactly aiming to marry the intellectually stimulating (whatever the level) with fantasy adventure. Most are the textbook example of "popcorn movies".

You can make a good movie without being artsy-fartsy.

….and that worked beautifully.

Eh, put them out in todays' environment and they wouldn't do so well.

Agreed. This was never intended to be a Joker running around like Caesar Romero, and not trying to be the next CGI-overloaded extravaganza.

No, it was some freeloaders hijacking his name to tell their own story because they were too lazy to just make their own story.

That seems like a bad way to handle the situation to me, I would think it would be better to actually address the issue rather than avoid it.

If you're going to make an Incel recruitment film you should at least be prepared to stand up and defend it

I'm a bit surprised to see that kind of attitude still around. I would have thought by now comic book movies would have proven themselves to be worth at least some respect.

Which ones, and what kind of respect?
“I literally described to Joaquin at one point in those three months as like, ‘Look at this as a way to sneak a real movie in the studio system under the guise of a comic book film’.

"Sneaking a real movie into the studio system." Ouch.

That's totally fair. People should really have some sense of proportion about what they pay to be entertained by, and not be so insecure about it.

I mean, I love the Fast & Furious movies but I don't feel like they're being robbed when the Oscars ignore them.

The Warner owned TNT's programming is on point tonight. The Dark Knight followed by the 1989 Batman movie sprinkled with an occasional commercial for the new Joker movie along the way.

If there are incel girls why are they not hooking up with incel boys. Not being able to get anyone to have sex with them seems to be the root of their problems. Jason

Yes, those are opinions. But they are opinions of filmmakers who may other wise produce a very great film if they didn't look down upon comic book films.

It's a weird twisty rope to walk but it's a matter of how these films are perceived as cinema art. Opinions or not, those opinions and perceptions carry weight.

I'm not. Hollywood is slow to embrace change, and attitudes are pretty well entrenched. Especially since comic book films have become blockbuster gold, there is a tendency to snub films just because it is made for the money rather than for the art.

Hollywood is a strange place.
Yes it is. Ive never been a fan of the oscars for this very reason. Theres no way a film like Annie Hall should be considered a better picture than Star Wars, a movie that basically revolitionized the industry. Or Christopher Reeves not even getting nominated for his great performance in Superman. Fantasy, science fiction and horror have always been frowned upon by the elite. Basically, any movie that the public would actually pay money to see.

Ill still see the movie, but I think anyone responsible for Starsky and Hutch and the Hangover has no credibility when it comes to taste.

The first Hangover movie is good along with Old School and Starsky and Hutch. Good in that genre. I hear War Dogs is good and more serious. There is no reason he can't be the next Steve Roach or Adam McKay. Jason

The writer of The Hangover 2 & 3 (though not 1) went on to write Chernobyl, one of the most acclaimed pieces of tv drama this year.

Yep.

Even Akira Goldsman managed to write A Beautiful Mind, probably the single data point separating his output from complete empty banality.

What's this all about?

"‘Joker’ Premiere Disinvites Interview Press From Hollywood Red Carpet"
That they are tired of the political dialog and just want people to watch the movie, I think. I found this bit interesting.
“Make no mistake: neither the fictional character Joker, nor the film, is an endorsement of real-world violence of any kind,” the statement reads. “It is not the intention of the film, the filmmakers or the studio to hold this character up as a hero.”
Especially after reading a quote from Stanley Kubrick regarding possible violence being associated with the release of his film "A Clockwork Orange:"
To try and fasten any responsibility on art as the cause of life seems to me to put the case the wrong way around. Art consists of reshaping life, but it does not create life, nor cause life. Furthermore, to attribute powerful suggestive qualities to a film is at odds with the scientifically accepted view that, even after deep hypnosis in a posthypnotic state, people cannot be made to do things which are at odds with their natures.

None of this controversy is new nor particularly surprising. But, it's all be seen before too.

...but the fact such manipulative BS occurred in the past would not stop those behind this manufactured "controversy". They thought they were going to hang their "Oh, its justifying___" / "Its going to inspire____" anchors around this film's neck and "bring it down", when It has nothing to do with real world events. They know thins, but they can never let a good chance to make false accusations go to waste.
