John Cho: "Star Trek more mature than Star Wars"

Isn't this like saying The Da Vinci Code is more mature than Indiana Jones? No one wins here.

Both fanbases would be a lot happier if they just accepted SW and Trek for what they are, as compared to making contrived, fanwankish arguments for the supposed superiority of one over the other. It's time to take the blinders off.

Just adding fuel to the fire, I think the Enterprise E can kick the Death Star's ass any day of the week. :p But in all seriousness, I do think Star Wars gets better fanfare and excitement than Star Trek does. People were waiting for the three PT's each for three years straight. And that was the general audience, not even the hardcore sci fi or Star Wars fans. People were jumping to find out who would be cast as the young Darth Vader / Anakin Skywalker. How many of them are anxiously waiting for Star Trek? How many of them were waiting to know who will be the next Captain Kirk, Spock or Sulu? I am guessing not many. :(

SW took fx up a notch in a popular "western" format (to distinguish it from the more "brie and white wine" 2001). That was its advantage. I think part of the excitement surrounding the SW movies was the anticipation of what new fx marvels there will be. I mean, really, the stories and characterizations were quite conventional.

Over a year out, I think it's too early for most folks to care about Trek XI. SW took everyone by surprise as I remember it, anyway.

Yes. The folks in this thread are seriously, seriously overestimating the maturity and depth of Star Trek. I recommend reading some literary SF to get some perspective...
