"John Carter of Mars" Moving Ahead!

I could have sworn we had a volcano in out systym that was active. oh well.
Oh yes! Jupiter's moon IO has several massive ones where the plumes are thrown way off the surface:

Those eruptions are on a MASSIVE scale...

Alright, guys, after the first ten responses I think timothy knows now that there are active volcanoes in the Solar System. ;)

I'm curious about Dejah's massive tattoos - her skin is supposed to be copper-colored, not be covered with copper-colored body art.

I was pretty stoked for this, because of Andrew Stanton, but I have to say the teaser did nothing positive for me. And why did Carter wake up on Mars (it seems) in his Earth clothing?

The fliers look interesting ...

Well having John Carter wake up naked is what happens in the books but can you see Disney doing that?

^
Hey, they did it for the Little Mermaid. It's all about your camera angles.

But yeah, I don't think getting to Mars fully clothed is much of a problem. If the trailer's any indication John strips down later anyway.

I was wondering about that, too. I haven't read Burroughs' stories, but I thought the red Martians were supposed to have red skin. Did TPTB give them red tattoos instead in some misguided attempt to make them look less alien? Was it a budget thing? Or are they planning on using digital wizardry to make their skin more red in post-production?

It's hard to tell these kinds of things from a trailer with such quick cuts, but after watching it again I could spot some shots (including a closeup and one of her standing next to Carter in the same lighting conditions) where Dejah Thoris does seem to have redder skin than he does, not just from her tattoos. I'm reading the books now and the red Martians are described as having a "light copperish colour" rather than straight red. Those shots seem to follow that description, at least to my eyes.

EDIT:

This page has some screenshots including the shots I'm talking about.

I'm pretty sure her skin is darker than it was in True Blood, although I guess she could just be more tan.

[re: Olympus Mons]
biggest and greatest volcano ever. and I do believe it is still active. so here's hoping they show it in the movie and all so never going to blow in our life times.
Certainly not... That volcano is not active by any reasonable interpretation of the term. It has not have been active for several million years. And I'm not sure how it could threaten us, even if it was active...
You mangled the quoting and attributed to me a quote written by someone replying to me.

Seeing the trailer, I'm not sure if this film is going to do the book justice. Dejah Thoris has a sort of iconic sex appeal. She's supposed to be wearing next to nothing and her beauty is supposed to be beyond compare. Crazily enough, she's one of the most memorable things from the book, at least for me. Second, the book is pretty darn violent. Or at least that's the sense I got from reading it, with this pulpy sense of carnage - definitely not PG rated, which is probably what this movie'll be. You can't expect these things from a Disney movie, but I think that's precisely why this film may not capture the spirit of the book.

i have the same concerns, but when i learned the book was finally going to be made into a movie i knew that we'd never get naked people. that part isn't really a big deal to me. as for Dejah...its hard to get a feel for her from the trailer. the violence part though...i don't expect it to be overly violent, but i'd say we will see something along the lines of the Pirates movies or Prince of Persia. its been a few years since i've read the books though.
