Jodie Whittaker's accent

I've never watched her in her other roles. Is her accent very thick? Her first two words of dialog weren't promising. I couldn't make out what she said, having to turn on subtitles just to find out it was "Oh, brilliant." Watched an interview with her that's on YouTube and there were entire sentences when I couldn't figure out what she was saying. So is her professional accent as thick as I fear? Will I have to watch Who with subtitles on all the time? Had to do that a lot with Jenna Coleman, Capaldi, and to some extent, Karen Gillan. I miss Received Pronunciation.

Whittaker has a Yorkshire accent, but I'm sure she'll enunciate more clearly when acting than she does when speaking in interviews or informally, because most actors do. That is one of the basic skills of acting, after all. And given that we've now had two Doctors with Scottish accents, one with a Mancunian accent, and one with an Estuary accent, I don't see what's wrong with a Yorkshire accent. After all, every planet has a North.

I found Whittaker perfectly comprehensible in Broadchurch, although there she was playing a character from Dorset in Southwest England, so I'd expect she was doing a Dorset accent there.

I'd have sworn she said "oh Berlin", but someone here with subtitles corrected that notion.

If it had been "Berlin", I wished they had gone for "Barcelona". 3 regenerations later the Doctor remembers somewhere she needed to visit, like Tom Baker talking about Brontosauri.

Don't most of the people from the North of Westeros also speak with Yorkie or other northern accents? See, lots of fantasy worlds have a North too. :P

Anyway, being a longtime purveyor of Japanese anime and live action shows, I've long since been used to subtitles. And with Doctor Who, my very francophone wife can only watch the show if I've got the CC or subs on. She got Capaldi more than Smith or Tennant, who had less intense accents but who spoke so much faster. Still, the Scottish mucks things up.

I've watched British shows all my life (including Shetland, which some people need subtitles for) and I've watched English football for more than 20 years so I'm accustomed to a wide variety of accents, and even I didn't catch the "Oh brilliant!" the first time. But as we watch her, we'll get used to her voice I'm sure.

but there were also a lot of audio effects in there as well and they were probably a bit too loud in the mix.

I don't have any problem with her accent but then I've watched her in 3 season of Broadchurch and don't have a problem with the different English accents in general.

It's "Doctor Who." As a American I thought we were suppose to only understand half of what the Doctor is saying most of the time. Also we not suppose to get many of the references. Took me years to find out a garden is a backyard and Cardiff I guess is the Cleveland of Britain.
