Jodie Whittaker is the 13th Doctor

They followed my wishes and cast someone I was only marginally aware of, so I'm totally on board with the choice. :)

I remember thinking she was pretty good in Attack the Block, but still haven't watched Broadchurch. I'll miss Capaldi. I hope they give her better material than some of the stuff he had to do.

Unlike you I'm perfectly able to criticize a post without resorting to ad hominem insults. You might want to stop digging.
cause you know me so well from a few posts, yep you must hate lots of people very quickly, or get offended over a lot of things quite quickly. BTW you are like on it today! I mean that sincerely. as a self appointed guardian against speech and very highly self thought, you're critique on others self-righteously is a superb work of art. I admire your tenacity and constant observing diligence to be ready with a quick pious reply at the drop of a hat takes stamina and a keen eye. bravo!:bolian:

I Hypothetical: we recast Star Trek. Captain Jane T Kirk and Ms Spock. Some people are going to love it. Some are going to loathe it, and quite rightly. it flies in the face of everything previous, as does the Jane Bond idea. It's like slashfic for me, you're bending the characters to suit... something other.

I don't think gender swapping is slashfic-y. I think each day that passes we realize more and more that Humans have universal traits that are independent of gender.

Like @The Wormhole said, Sackhoff's Starbuck is amazing and she will probably shape how Starbuck will be portrayed in future iterations of BSG. I think that also comes from the fact that NuBSG Starbuck was very loyal to the way Starbuck was portrayed in TOS. Even though NuBSG Starbuck wasn't technically an Orphan like TOS Starbuck, she felt like one her entire life. She also shares the drive to belong somewhere, of treating her crewmates like the Family she never had. She's impulsive and she can't live without Apollo just like TOS Starbuck couldn't. That's Starbuck alright.

I mean, Katee captured even some of Dirk Benedict's mannerisms.

So yeah, I don't care if they cast Kevin Pollak for the role of Captain Kirk. If that's the same Kirk that cheated the Kobayashi Maru test, that gives his life for his Crew and Ship, who's friends with Spock... That's Kirk. Jane, Jaime or James.

The same goes for the Doctor. If Jodie's Doctor is never cruel or cowardly, if she never gives up and never gives in... She's the Doctor to me.

Actually I think it's deeply wrong, clearly the doctor is a man. A male man who drinks Martini and uses a Walther PPK, proving his manhood by bedding every female in sight, especially the bad guy's token girlfriend. I'm pretty there's been a mix up and they fully intend to cast Jason Statham really

In fact this is so troubling I seem unable to get erections, my masculinity has been so thrown out of true. Please BBC, tell me this has all been a terrible mistake.

I'm not sure what you're even talking about. I didn't call you any names, neither did I indicate that I have any particular negative feelings towards you as a person. You are being overly dramatic again.
You were the one to hurl an ad hominem insult. I welcome the fact that you're trying to go for a more civil approach now.

I was strictly commenting on your hysterical opinions here in this thread and how they seem very sexist.
If you want to keep playing the victim here, then that is your prerogative. You made hysterical posts, we called you out.

How that is in any way trying or achieving to limit your thoughts is beyond me. You're free to think your precious thoughts and voice them. The people who disagree with those opinions will react to that.

You seem to think your opinions are so special that they should be immune to other people's judgements and reactions. That is not the case.

Someone used the word 'avuncular' earlier, and that's what the Doctor's usually been, wise, caring and a guardian. Traits associated with a male figure. Can Whittaker carry this off? We'll have to see. But to deny her a chance and "ZOMG! Nevah wotchin agennnn!!1!" is just plain silly.

I was actually hoping for Richard Ayoade but It looked like Kris Marshall.both could hold well that role .but I don't have confidence Whittaker can bring 60% of the viewer base whovians who are traditionalists along with an already limping along series in it's ratings, lest we forget the female ghostbusters bombing at the box office. so, I'm worried..

Richard Ayoade would have been amazing! I could see him being absolutely like a matt smith type

I truly do not understand the argument that casting a female as Dr Who has something to do with political correctness.

I rather think it has something to do with this being the THIRTEENTH doctor the series has had in the last 54 years. TPTB merely want something diiferent to shake things up a bit and this certainly counts.

13 is considered unlucky in some cultures. I thought they might skip the 13th by having the 12th regenerate into someone else at Christmas, and then have that person regenerate into the 14th Doctor (played by Whittaker) come Spring. But then I was also for a season long buildup to the next Doctor that is actually played by these buildup season's companion, who turns out to be the Doctor with temporary memory loss followed by having to keep the flow of time intact until the Doctor regenerates at the end of the season into the Companion who restarts the events from that point of view while the "Companion" going off the become the regular Doctor having regained the Doctor's memory for the following season.

Also this isn't the first time the Doctor has been a woman. It isn't even the third time if I recall correctly counting various media into the equation.

Look on the bright side... maybe she'll be more like WONDER WOMAN, blowing everyone's expectations to kingdom come.

Yeah, I know, I'm old. Bite me. Avuncular is associated with an uncle type figure. And of course there are many strong women who are wise, strong guardians. I'm speaking in general.

OTOH, as repeatedly stated, I will be watching, because it could be quite interesting, and everyone deserves a chance. She, like any actor before her, has the chance to be brilliant in the role.

That said, I would like even less to see Richard Ayoade in the role. No gravitas.

Yup. He'll forever remember it as "That time I regenerated and both of my dicks fell off... I mean yeah, that was terribly stressful, but I DID save a lot of money on hand lotion that century."

Not as quickly as YOU got offended by the producers of a TV show you don't even watch casting a female lead after almost 60 years on television.

as a self appointed guardian against speech
She's not self appointed. She's a MODERATOR. It's kind of her job.

Or an aunt.

Honestly, Doctor Who is such a versatile and colorful character that it is the ultimate demonstration of an actor's dynamic abilities. You don't just "play" the Doctor, you have to OWN the role, get deep into it, and sell your interpretation of who and what Doctor Who is. Almost anything can fit in that characterization and even the Doctor might be surprised by how all of that has changed.

E.g. "Oh that's so rude... is what what I am now? Rude? Is that the kind of person I am?"

No one is saying you can't offer your opinion. No one is stopping you from speaking. So let's dispense with that. Of course what you are asking for is to speak your opinion without any consequence, without anyone calling you on it, which sounds like YOU don't want people to speak their mind.

I'll take Peter Davison's post and run with it. It sounds like you are having trouble with change. Maybe if you lead with that, rather than saying a woman can't do a job, that a woman will destroy the show. Saying that, well, rightly, you will get called a sexist.

Change can be scary. But, it's a fucking TV show. Change isn't always bad.
