Jodie Foster Comes Out

Since the only celebrity gossip I get is when it gets mentioned in forums like this, I'm actually surprised.

Oh well, she seems happy and that's all that matters.

As for dowsing, it's the most common submission for the JREF Million dollar challenge. To date, all forms of dowsing have been shown to be false.

We've got another take on it in the UK. Ley lines. Some people take it incredibly seriously and get really pissed off when they are laughed at. But the druids are the best, with their 'ancient celtic rituals'. Bumping into one is guaranteed to brighten your day.

I can just imagine.

Yeah, people get mad. The reality is that the smart ones don't apply. You'll never see John Edwards, Sylvia Browne or any other huckster actually commit to the challenge and follow through. James Randi has had tons of accusations brought against him by people failing the Million Dollar Challenge, and all of those cases have been lost by the challengers because they failed to meet the established requirements, so I take such accusations with a big grain of salt.

Well, if someone can go back "in", then my virginity can grow back.

There...that tell'd 'em.

Matt Bomer went back in when he landed the series regular lead in "White Collar" ... Brian Smith went back in when he became a series regular in StarGate Universe.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that they're both owned by NBC/Universal.

Back in the 80s there was a claim made for dowsing in Canada, (I'm going by memory from reports at the time here)

Source?

That would be the "memory from reports at the time" bit.

I remember it was winter, I remember the gravel path they used, I remember the nice-looking overcoat the university physicist was wearing, and that's about it for detail!

The other thing was that it wasn't dowsers or the like who were involved with this - it was a physics faculty who were also skeptics (they weren't claiming to have proved dowsing exists, just that they were surprised to find they couldn't definitively bust it, and that they felt it deserved more study) who basically disagreed with Randi over what qualified as scientific method and, more importantly, what constituted keeping an agreement on terms.

Are you referring to the 1980s Munich tests? If so, Randi wasn't involved in those. If you're referring to the dowsing tests Randi and a team of scientists ran in the early 1980s, those were legitimate tests. Tests where dowsing failed to reach beyond the minimum threshold of chance. The guidelines for meeting the threshold have always been that way.

From Wiki:
The official Challenge rules[30] stipulate that the participant must agree, in writing, to the conditions and criteria of their test. Claims that cannot be tested experimentally are not eligible for the Challenge. To ensure that the experimental conditions themselves do not negatively affect a claimant's ability to perform, non-blinded preliminary control tests are often performed. For example, the JREF has dowsers perform a control test, in which the dowser attempts to locate the target substance or object using their dowsing ability, even though the target's location has been revealed to the applicant. Failure to display a 100% success rate in the open test will cause their immediate disqualification. However, claimants are usually able to perform successfully during the open test, confirming that experimental conditions are adequate. According to the JREF, despite success in these open tests, no claimants have yet been able to successfully demonstrate evidence of their claims while blinded under otherwise identical conditions. Some participants have stated afterwards that the threat of disqualification is the main factor in their apparent success in the open test. Randi has said that few unsuccessful applicants ever seriously consider that their failure to perform might be due to the nonexistence of the power they believe they possess.[31]
