JJ-verse Botany Bay

darkwing_duck1

Vice Admiral
With all the talk about a JJ-verse version of "Space Seed"/"Wrath of Khan", I thought I'd take a shot at doing a new Botany Bay.

Yes I know the ship SHOULDN'T look any different, but what the frak, you know? Just having some fun...

Nice design, but it feels a little too Star Wars like to me.

Matt Jefferies designs were very "submarine" like so I'd imagine that JJ would use that as a starting point, maybe a fusion of several submarines with ques from these ships may be more in kin to what we've seen of JJ's work.

Interesting...

I was trying to keep at least the overall "lines" close to Jeffries but put a more "industrial" stamp on it (and frankly give it a bit more of a realistic proportion to it).

What's throwing it off for you? The general shapes or the proportions of masses?

I COULD pull it back and make it more Jeffries like...I've got some other similar ones I could rework.

I think it's the overall mass, just too bulky. I like how weak the ol' one looked. Really gave it that Pre-Ent feel to it.
Don't get me wrong though, I do like this ship, just not for the DY-100, perhaps a cargo ship of that time.

What's making it look "Star Wars" is all the texturing all over the hull...looks very Star Destroyer. Smooth that out, tone it down and see where that puts you.

It looks more like a ship from Babylon 5 than Star Wars to me. In any event, it could work in the Abramsverse.

In defense of the texturing, it's supposed to make the ship look more "primitive" than the smooth-hulled 23rd century look. I may go back and tinker with using a little less or making it more subtle and see where that gets me.

It looks like it could be a part of the BSG ragtag fleet.

Which is funny, because I have probably 30-40 BSG RTF ships sitting on my hard-drive. I used to have a thread about them, but no one was giving me any feedback, so I gave up on it.

Anyways, here's a shot at something emphasizing the original lines more. Still heavily texured at his point.

It doesn't have to be totally smooth...that's the TOS version...but what you've got there feels too much, too busy. Shoot for something in the middle. Don't just change patches at random. Find a logic to why it's "here" and not "there".

Well now that does look more like the original there :)

Yeah, but it also has the same problems I had with the original, mainly being thrust-stress issues. You have those big honking cargo pods/bays/whatever sticking way out from the centerline of thrust when the drive is on.

In my admittedly NON-professional engineering mind, that would generate a lot of shearing force and torque on the pods as the "inner" side received direct thrust and the "outer" side was left to be pulled along...

Ok, how does this strike you?

I changed to just one kind of greeble texture and took it off of everything but the engine, the forward "pod" and the spine, where I figure most of the systems that would piossibly need external access would be. The rest (cargo pods, tanks, connectors and engine vent) get a generic "weathering" texture just to add a little bit of visual "break up" to the components.

Being that the only portion of the Star Trek timeline that's changed is the 23rd century, anything from ENT or earlier has to remain the same or fans will gripe about continuity again. So the Botany Bay has to look just like it did on TOS, most likely with details not shown in TOS or TOSR.

But what you have going here would definately work for some other ship, like a cargo carrier or even some alien vessel. Paint it green and it just might work for the Gorn or even the Orions. :techman:

What he said :)

Getting better. The textures and greeblies still feel a little overdone, but the logic is there - the pods are smoother and simpler, the ship proper has more detail.

I can try to reduce them in "intensity", but that's about it...I can't texture just part of a "part".

I like your work... just not sure I like it for the DY 100.
Seeing as how the DY ships were launched before warp flight, I'd venture a guess and say they were before artificial gravity.
So the nose/head would be for ONLY for the bridge, exercise rooms, etc, where as the cargo bay (in this case, it's a full ring that spins to give gravity) is where the mess hall, living quarters, etc are.
The nose would probably be inspired by WWII ships, maybe the SR-71 Blackbird.
Making it kinda sleek but still clunky, with ENT/Kelvin like hull plating.

I was thinking that myself. Though, it is an interesting design.

Personally, I think the original design for the exterior of the Botany Bay would still be believable. I'm sure they'd have to completely redesign the interior... I know art departments, they love to change things!

I like this one the best, the original gave me that 'corellian corvette' vibe with the multiple thruster nozzles in the aft - this baby has the one big honking sucker on it's keister - and since the original I think was driven by a pulse-fusion drive (or the DY-500, take your pick) that works well, like a Daedelous (the drive, not the ship class)
