JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Stills!

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

My god, a few months ago it was "give us something, ANYTHING, even just a screenshot!!" and now it's "Wah, they're showing us too much!"

I don't envy JJ and crew at all for having to deal with such a whiny, bipolar fanbase.

Yeah, no shit. What a bunch of whiny bitches we all are.

Taking it a step further: Does anyone honestly think J.J. Abrams is going to give away anything really relevant in trailers.

THIS IS J.J. ABRAMS WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE...

YOU KNOW, THE GUY WHO CREATED LOST AND ALIAS AND CLOVERFIELD.

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

Personally, I still believe not enough has been said about the movie. We only have vague ideas of what the hell is going on. Too much about this movie is being kept a secret. I may have to avoid the movie in response to not knowing anything. Yeah, that's right, I said avoid the movie. Consider the implications.

Are you kidding? <snip>
He may very well be; it wouldn't be the first time. Or he may be pointing out obliquely the very same thing Messiani says here more directly:

My god, a few months ago it was "give us something, ANYTHING, even just a screenshot!!" and now it's "Wah, they're showing us too much!"
I, too, remember people complaining in mid-summer of last year that they were losing interest in the movie because too little information had been released.

I think it's all being pretty carefully weighed and timed and measured out, though.

...

Back on topic, I still think all the stuff that's being released is carefuly done so that the same scenes are being shown (the skydiving, delta vega + a couple of others etc...). It's not like they're revealing new plot details.
I think the same, pretty much. We keep seeing the same little vignettes from different angles, and they tease us every once in a while with something we haven't seen before, but I think there's a lot to the movie and to the story which will still be new when we sit down in the theater to watch it from start to finish.

(Not sure to what vaguely similar thread you refer, but I just try to do the best I can. You'll note that at no time have I ever claimed to be perfect. ;) )

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

Yeah I've hit my limit. I had to check out Cupcake, but that's it for me. No more spoilers, I'll be strong!!! :rommie:

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

I think if you combined all of the material that has been shown in the trailers and the stills and you don't include what has been repeated you probably wind up with a grand total of a minute and a half of images having nothing to do with each other and don't tell anything more about the film than any other trailers do about any film.

Relax.

Actually, everything added up would total closer to 3-4 minutes, (first trailer alone was 2 minutes) but that is a drop in the bucket of a two hour film.

We ain't seen nothin' yet. :bolian:

I like these little snippets, they're exciting!

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

Careful, this thread has a vague similarity to a thread from a few weeks ago. M'Sharak will probably want to close this one too, as if it was in any way bothering anyone or hampering the board

Personally, I'm not a fan of mods who like to show off their power all the time. Ones who close topics for the slightest, most meaningless of reasons for instance. Obviously I'm not going to tell you how to do your job, so please see this more as constructive comments; but every day I always come across a thread that you deem necessary to close, and most of the time, it's for no reason, for instance the lens flares one. Why close it? Why stop people discussing it? Was that topic really hurting anyone by being open? No. Same with ones that were bumped up after 3 or 4 months? What's the point of closing it, why aren't we allowed to share our thoughts? As long as it's not abusive or there isn't 10 similar topics on the same page, there shouldn't be a problem.

Meanwhile 3 or 4 spam threads like the blue warp nacelles, constantly shouting or robau topics are allowed to clutter up the board with pointless, garbage, off topic junk. ONE jokey, off topic thread that has no purpose, fair enough, but THREE?? I just find the modding a little strange.

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

Back on Topic-
I don't mind spoilers that much. I knew almost everything about Watchmen and enjoyed it so much I saw it twice (last time I paid to sit in a theater and watch a movie twice was the original release of The Empire Strikes Back.

LIke most forums this one is usually careful to warn of spoilers and mask them from accidentral viewing- that is great for those who wish to remain surprised fo ra film. I do think there is going to ba a lot that will be a surprise, IIRC JJA has delayed the novellization from releasing until the film is in theaters.

Imagine that, as the premiere date gets closer information leaks out!

The photos, commericals, clips are just building word of mouth

"hey wanna check out that new star trek movie?"

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

Now that the release date is so close, and so much information has already come out, I'm ready to shut down and hibernate until the film hits theaters. A while back, when everything was still so secretive, I wanted to get glimpses of things - one or two really good shots of the crew, the sets and the ship. I feel like we've gotten a LOT more than that in recent weeks (possibly too much?). I've seen all that I want to see until I watch the film. I'm not reading spoilers. It may be difficult to avoid reading or hearing something for the next few weeks but I'll do my best.

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

Yeah, I'm not watching all these new film clips and whatever, I'm going to see the movie, no need to diminish anything now by knowing more. Bit of a bummer not discussing all the new details with everyone though.

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

Ive tried to avoid these things but, damn, next thing i know im looking at an image going "Wooooah, fuck me thats amazing" or ":wtf:" or "" or ""... The list is endless.

but hey, i remember not wanting to see any leaked images etc, but at the same time really really REALLY wanting to.

My hand just has free will, its a Star Trek fan in itself, cos everytime i try to avoid something, its opens it up. ;)

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

I saw the theater trailer and a few stills early on, but since then, I've avoided anything at all about the movie. I'm even trying to not think about the few spoilers I do know, so I won't accidently make any connections.

I remember seeing the first Star Wars when I hadn't heard a word about it; it was a total jaw-dropping surprise. I can't reproduce that completely with the new Trek movie, but I'm trying!

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

I had gotten the novellization of the Star Wars coming back from vacation in college. When I read it I kept thinking "How the hell can they possiblly show this on the screen???" While waiting to see the movie the first time in the theater lobby the sounds of the final battle thundered through the walls, shaking everything. That is when I knew it was going to be something special.
Knowing what does not bother me- it is the how that is fun.
Remember this is the same guy who created Cloverfield. Despite the viral ad campaign nobody knew exactly what was going to happen until the actual movie was on screen. I do not think he is going to let the important things out- just the bits and pieces to make even the 'raped my childhood' crowd want to see it anyway.

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

Well, after seeing the clip of Urbans McCoy, im up for it just to witness De Kelley being channelled as if Urban were some other wordly, errr, spirit channelling device thing.

Seriously, it looks to be an amazing performance.

Why in God's name would a studio ever give anything more away than the vaguest idea of "what the hell is going on?" What would be the point in seeing the movie if you knew "what the hell is going on."
Yeah, I guess you're right. Who would ever be dumb enough to adapt a published novel or a produced play to a motion picture?

Right, because that's the same thing.

Just like with biopics.

Same thing as fictional screenplays that were screenplays first, right?

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

Or anything based on a historical event- harbor battles, big ships sinking, big balloons exploding- what is the point of showing anything on film when you already know how it turns out?

Kind of silly to compare that to a scifi adventure movie, don't you think?

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

Not really- the case was being made that knowing what happens in a movie destroys the enjoyment and my point has been it is that it is the how it is done which makes a movie great.
I am never too concerned about spoilers- sometimes they are helpful in letting you know what to watch for and the anticipation of how it will be done on the big screen is fun to specualte. I think this applies to just about every film genre. You know the Hindenberg is going to explode, but watching the events unfold is whst makes the movie.

You mean that guy that promises a whole lot and doesn't deliver

Re: JJ- Stop Giving Us Commercials with New Scenes & Releasing New Sti

Anyway...

If you want people to be interested in what is perceived as a tired old franchise you need to take risk. Look at Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark come on and the guy who made Elf was directing. Then the first trailer showed up and two things convinced me that this movie was worth watching. First Downey nailed Stark's character though they had to show one of the best scenes in the movie to convince us. Then they showed us the first prototype armor and I almost freaked because it looked both real and like the comice book version. If you want to convince jaded fans you need to show respect for the material.

Now look at Star Trek. Nothing they showed so far has really wowed me. Quintos looks like Spock and I love Sylar but he hasn't convinced me he is Spock. Pine is worse. He looks really small in the captains chair and he lacks the gravitas that Shatner brought to the role. Then there is the Enterprise. Oh God it looks aweful. It looks totally malformed. I never liked the NX-01 but at least it was aestically pleasing. Worst of all they showed the Enterprise being built in the middle of a frakking corn field just to give Pine his hero moment. Ugh!! Finally time travel villians can you get more cliched?!
