"JJ" Scotty vs. "Classic" Scotty

Under the circumstances it seems highly likely that Marcus would have arranged for any Enterprise-related business to be funneled through his office.

Hell, he was probably overjoyed when Kirk actually -asked- to go after Harrison.

NuScotty's refusal to follow a corrupt order is one of the most noble forms of professionalism a person can perform, as far as I'm concerned. It's something we need a lot more of in the States.

I have loved Simon Pegg in 99% of everything he's ever done... but, with the possible exception of "Beyonce Uhura", his performances in JJ's faux "Star Trek" films are the ones that are the most far away from the original character.

He's not Scotty. He doesn't look like Scotty and he doesn't act like Scotty. He's somehow constructed a completely new character that seems to be based more on Spud from Trainspotting than any depictions I've ever seen of the real Scotty. It's embarassing really, as is his dogged and stubborn defence of Abrams, Orci and all the other people currently crapping on REAL Star Trek.

Shame on you, Mr. Pegg.

You do know there is no REAL Scotty? :guffaw:

As someone who loves Jimmy Doohan's take on the character in TOS, it really does come down to the script. The actors can only read the lines given to them by the scriptwriter.

For me, I was disappointed with the character in Star Trek 2009 but was pleasantly surprised by how he was handled in Star Trek Into Darkness.

When you start saying "shame on you" to actors because you don't like how they played their roles or that they enjoyed and promoted their own films, it might be time to take a step or a thousand back because you're taking this entirely too seriously. Simon Pegg didn't kick your puppy, he acted in a way you didn't like in a movie you didn't like. He has nothing to be ashamed of, and to even suggest that he does looks ridiculous and like you're just trying to get a rise of people with hyperbolic comments.

^THIS.

Simon Pegg's Scotty is exactly what Scotty would be like if he were created recently, and there's nothing wrong with that.

The problem with his portrayal in ST09 was that he didn't even come into the film for the best part of an hour and a half and even then he only had time for a bit of comic relief, his part in STID was a lot more substantial. Overall I haven't got a problem with any of the new cast, in fact I would say they are the strongest part of the reboot movies.

If they get the story right with no stupid coincidences or silly plot holes ST3 will be a winner

Since those have been in abundance in all twelve of the Star Trek movies, I wouldn't hold my breath. :p

I think Pegg was far more recognizable as Scotty in the second film as opposed to the first. Hoping they get him into the captains chair in the third film.

Yeah, I thought he was basically a human Jar Jar Binks in the first film. Too much of a comic relief and utterly obnoxious to a point I just called him "Scotty by Name Only". The second film however (and this is one of the reasons I rank it higher than ST09) at least did a good job of adding more to his character and taking him a little more seriously. He still has his goofy moments, but it was reasonably toned down and I hope they take that further in the next film where we do get to see him in the chair. Have him showing his poker face against whatever foe, because I loved those moments in TOS where he was boss and was able to figure shit out.

Are you actually saying that acting is only a process of reading out pre-written lines in a script???

I think both Doohan and Pegg would argue there's a bit more to it than that. :wtf:

Since Scotty is my favorite character, I was a little put off by the portrayal of him in the trailer of 09. However when I actually saw the film it worked. When he finally gets to engineering and is in command there, I began to see the seriousness and hint of the Scotty I knew.
