Oh, joy everlasting! Another thread that can be potentially taken down the well-trodden JJ-bashing path.

So every thread where you might "potentially" hear an opinion you don't like should be closed?

:wtf:
Not at all. It just seems that, more often than not, some people seize such an opportunity to speak ill of the franchise when threads that specifically attempt to draw comparisons between new and prime are started. Such threads rarely end well.

If this one persists through civility, I will be pleasantly surprised. :)

As will I.....but I'm not going to hold my breath for it. :)

I'd be happy if the JJ universe is confined to the movies and a new tv spin off is set in the prime universe. JJ's universe is an off shoot like the Mirror Universe so it's never going to be the "real" timeline to me. But if Trek returns to the Roddenberry universe then it has to be set even further into the future than the 24th century in order to give it a chance to move on from the Kirk/Picard eras. Setting Next Generation a century after TOS worked out extremely well so it's only fair a new series is given the same chance. I would like a brand new crew of fresh new characters continuing the legacy of Trek.

I think it would be a mistake to keep on going back to TOS and recasting Kirk, Spock, Bones, etc. The other shows may not be as popular or well known as TOS, except arguably TNG, but they all added something unique to the franchise even if they did go over old ground and copy each other from time to time. I want new characters I can grow to love as much as Picard, Data, Worf, Seven of Nine, Sisko, Dax, The Doctor and all the other brilliant characters from the spin offs.

While I don't think it truly matters as long as it's good, if I had my choice I'd take the new universe. I'm already invested in it, and wanting to see more of it. The classic universe is great but it's had its run, and that run ended, full stop, 13 years ago.

The IDW comics are fairly decent.

Ah, see, I'm not really aware of the comics or what goes on in them. When it comes to continuity and such, I don't like comics, because there are usually several editions that branch off into new storylines and I can't follow them all. It's like the MLP comics: I'd love to own them and read them, but there are something on the lines of about 20 storylines going on at any given time, and I just can't keep pace with that, especially when there's a lack of money issue on my end.

So for me it's the TV/Movie universe that carries the torch, and in that regard, the classic universe is d-e-d.

Trek is a bit different, because IDW only has one regular monthly book going. They have some mini-series, but they usually don't crossover into the main storylines. You can usually grab the trade collections from Amazon for a much better price than buying the individual issues.

Does anyone really think Trek will ever be on tv again? I could see an attempt being made but most sci-fi shows these days get cancelled after a few seasons and that's if they're lucky. It's sad but I think the Abrams movies might be Trek's last hurrah.

Trek will definitely be on TV again. Might take a few more years or even decades, probably won't be set in the Prime Universe, but there will be another Trek TV series.

Heck, TV revivals are all the rage these days: HEROES, THE X-FILES, TWIN PEAKS, even THE GILMORE GIRLS.

Nothing stays dead forever. Heck, we're on our second FLASH tv series already, and our third live-action SUPERGIRL . . ..

And need I mention DOCTOR WHO?

I hope so but until science fiction becomes as popular as it used to be I wouldn't hold out much hope of a new Trek series lasting very long. We were truly spoiled in the 90's. I can't imagine we'll ever see that level of success again.

You could say Trek has already been revived. Just not as a tv series...yet:rommie:

I voted for the original timeline, as I'd love to see something 50 or so years after TNG/DS9/Voyager was set. There is so much potential for Trek, not just time periods that have been used so far. But in the end, I'll still watch it, as I love science fiction.

"...a few more years or even decades...." Probably end up with a new team running the show, and they will likely have their own interpretation of Trek. So, in effect, another reboot into yet another timeline.

If it's set in a recognisable Trek universe (and is good), I'll be happy.

Amen. It could be a buddy cop show featuring Sybok and Dr. Pulaski - if it meets the above requirements, I'm watching it.

Late to the Party, here and so sorry, but this? ^^ :wtf:

My Pain Runs Very Deep.

I am an Old Fart enough, and emotional enough to have an attachment to TOS and the Prime Timeline that will never fade. That said, I am in (mostly) agreement with those that favor good story and writing and acting over the "when" of it. Maybe not in Narnia, but I would be happy with good, entertaining stuff that looked and smelled and tasted and felt like Star Trek. You know, that certain "je ne sais quoi'Pla! :)

I voted "No Preference" because I think Abrams did Trek very well, and I enjoyed the original shows too. They are all fun, entertaining and enjoyable in varying degrees.

If made to choose, I would go with Abrams Trek. But, I think a TV show will probably be its own (new) thing, a reboot or the like, to fit a contemporary era in terms of visual aesthetics, technology and such.

I voted no preference. I find things to like in both timelines. I am one of those weird ones who is perfectly satisfied with the continuing stories of the original timeline in the lit verse. I honestly don't need to 'see' what happens to everyone.

I prefer the Prime Universe hands down. Taken in its entirety, it offered a marvelous blend of drama, action , humour, and sometimes, thought provoking philosophizing. There certainly were failures of execution, daring, and creativity as well, unfortunately not rare occurrences either. But to present a vision of the future that contains some hopefulness of survival and triumph, while facing existential threats as great as our own, and also retaining more than a spark of familiarity with the character of humanity as we know it, makes the long and winding saga something ineffably dear to myself and so many others.

I really have no feeling for Nutrek. Obviously, it is fine to make entertaining films that features a number of well done, plausible characterizations of names we know , although I don't how crucially important that is to the director given the demographics of the audience that he has to attract to continue making the franchise a viable one.
It is pretty hackneyed to call these movies that just happen to carry the same name. Despite the ludicrousness of some of the conceits presented, there certainly is considerable imagination and craft interwoven into this divergent path. But for me, it is encased in the action and spectacle paradigm that today, perforce seems to be the requisite means to success for the blockbuster production, perhaps even more so as the relevance of the traditional film delivery platform is declining. In much younger years, I found such movies diverting and worth my attention, but not any longer.

The question of which format should represent the franchise's future, especially on television and its coming permutations, is a different one. Although my vote would be the same in this discussion, I honestly think that despite the fan offerings and very interesting and engaging projects like Renegades, the hope for a major broadcast, net/pay offering, etc. that continues the Prime Universe is a vain one that has long since sailed.

The first new person in years to take over and the first thing he does is kill Kirks dad, Spocks mother and blow up Vulcan and Romulus. It's impossible to say what the people who will replace JJ will do. We could get a rebooted third timeline. Or they could say its set in this or that universe, but just go ahead do something different anyway.

Among the interesting contenders for me are,

1. 2160s, which would be consistent with Prime or Nu, and in continuity with "Enterprise", or

2. Prime 2390s and continue with the "Prime" timeline 13+ years after Nemesis, or

3. A reboot. In which case it might not matter which century it is. Or,

4. Nu Trek 2260s, contemporary with Nu Trek films. Or,

5. Something set far ahead of Prime 2390s. Maybe the Galactic Federation of the 31st century with time travel and transwarp, etc.

In other words, I voted no preference. I'm pretty open. :techman:

I'd quite like to see the crew of the JJ Abrams Enterprise permanently transported to the 25th century or later. Obviously not in their timeline since Vulcan is destroyed but in the Prime timeline/universe. I really like Pine, Quinto and Urban as Kirk, Spock and Bones but I have no attachment to the Abrams universe since it's just an alternate reality and not the one Trek took place in throughout all the other shows and movies.

Having Kirk and the Enterprise crew on tv weekly in a series that takes place in the Prime universe and after the events we witnessed in TNG, DS9 and Voyager would please me no end. If it's a success they can start spinning it off with new crews again. A pipe dream, I know.
