I was wondering which of the two universes, with their varying themes, characteristics, and focuses people preferred. I personally preferred the Original timeline. However, I had no issue with Abrams until I read an article which indicated that Abrams' negation of all the old storylines limited the ability of CBS and Paramount to make new series based in the old universe. Apparently it would confuse viewers to have different universes running.

What do you think?

According to reports at the time, CBS made/makes somewhere around $20 million a year on TOS merchandise.

I don't think they wanted to risk losing their golden goose on JJ's reboot merch.

To put this into perspective; Disney in 2013 (before Frozen) reported in Forbes that they made $3-4 billion dollars a year on their "Princess" line merchandise.

I believe Disney makes about $10 billion a year on their Marvel Comics merchandise.

That is some serious money.

I doubt CBS or Paramount cares about "confused viewers". And I doubt the majority would be confused. The only person confused in this would probably be the person who wrote the "article".

^I've already made my vote here and with my money seeing the new movies; I'd like that to continue on instead of the old continuity. The people buying the old merch aren't going to be here forever, as I (and Dennis) have said, and people are liking the new movies a lot by way of how big the grosses on them are. So, it's time for CBS (and Paramount) to choose; old or new? I'd go with what's making money at the box office and getting younger fans, if I was an executive at both companies.

Star Trek's $20 million is chump change in comparison to what other properties make off their merch.

My preference would be to let Star Trek RIP in Peace and to have a new property as a "spiritual successor" rather than another spin off, prequel, sequel, reboot or remake.

Oh, joy everlasting! Another thread that can be potentially taken down the well-trodden JJ-bashing path.

I don't like the idea of rebooting Trek... or rebooting series or movies in general. Everything Star Trek has been, *pooof*, gone...

I'd prefer the new timeline.

The old timeline had its run, and it was a good one. Several hundred episodes and 20+ movie hours' worth.

Time to keep things fresh. (And yes, despite a little retreading that STID did, it was still prety fresh.)

JJ era timeline please. :)

Couldn't give a tepid shit. As long as it's intelligent, brilliantly written and hugely entertaining, you can set in Narnia for all I care.

Also, why do people assume that a show in the new timeline would somehow be wildly different to the prime stuff? I mean, if Tuvok never mentions Vulcan in Voyager, that show could just as easily be set in the new timeline and qualify as part of nutrek. Isn't the new timeline just the destruction of Vulcan and Kirk's dad. Well as long as characters aren't constantly bringing up either of those things, hey presto, you've got nutrek.

The timeline (or alternate reality) doesn't matter though. I think it's the tone, style and execution that matter. You could have a nutrek show that's slow, derivative and twee; you could have a prime show that's ground-breaking, exciting and has mass appeal. Timeline doesn't really affect any of those things.

If it's set in a recognisable Trek universe (and is good), I'll be happy.

Exactly. It's the execution that matters, not what timeline it's set in. Old continuity, new continuity, newer continuity . . . none of that determines whether any hypothetical new series is going to be any good or not. That's all down to the writing, acting, production values, etc.

"Canon" does NOT necessarily equal quality.

I will agree with the sentiment that as long as it's entertaining, who cares when it is set.

But I have taken a liking to the JJ-verse. So while I might lean more towards it, I honestly don't care if there's another good show set in the old universe.

Just make it good. :)

So every thread where you might "potentially" hear an opinion you don't like should be closed?

:wtf:
Not at all. It just seems that, more often than not, some people seize such an opportunity to speak ill of the franchise when threads that specifically attempt to draw comparisons between new and prime are started. Such threads rarely end well.

If this one persists through civility, I will be pleasantly surprised. :)
