JJ Abrams says TOS Kirk will never return

I am sure they could invent a reason why Kirk isn't dead. After Leonard Nimoy died I think this is even more reason to bring Shatner back.

And as for the new movies... JJ himself said he was never a Star Trek fan to begin with...

Really? Can't bring Shatner back as Kirk? Because of the different Kelvin timeline, the events in Generations never happened. Time travel brings the two Kirk's together. Boom. I win the internet.

Whether the director is a fan of the property being worked on or not is irrelevant.

Kor
This.

Also, if Shatner could be made to work in in a story that wasn't a contrivance, I would be all for it. Unfortunately, that has yet to appear.

I've never understood the drive to want to bring Kirk back. I didn't even really want him in Generations, let alone having him stroll around nUTrek.

I would ask if movie producers had learned their lesson about copying other Star Trek works from Generations but then I watch First Contact and Nemesis-answers my question every time.

I think @Greg Cox talked about how as soon as he was hired to write a book a TV or film series he didn't know, he immediately watched it all. That's what producers and writers do-it's their job to create a good story, not be a fan.

Disney doesn't give a #@%* about Star Wars but they just made the best Star Wars since The Empire Strikes Back.

Can't they just change the timeline again and bring him back? Doctor Who's done that, X-Men: Days of Future Past did that.

You could have nuKirk rummaging through some family hierlooms. He comes across a video of his greatganddad, famed archaeologist Dave Kirk. He watches it, whatever revelation Grandpa Dave comes up with acts as a catalyst to whatever the film is about. That's a way of giving Shatner his final cameo.

See... I just don't like those kind of ideas. I can't speak for everyone, but for me, the reason i'd want Shatner back is to specifically end his Kirk on a better note than Generations did.

Star Trek 2009 had the scene to really make that happen, and after reading the original scripted ending versus what we got, I actually do feel it's absence. It would have been that one last little surprise at the very end.

The next opportunity that would have made sense would be the 50th anniversary, but Beyond is already completed. So that won't happen.

So any genuine opportunity that won't feel completely lame, and cheesy has come and gone I think. I don't really want to see "Shatner playing nuKirk's great granddad" or things along the lines of what Enterprise was rumored to do, have him playing some side character dude... No. If Shatner isn't playing old James T. Kirk, I really don't want to see him. Anything other than that would pull me from the movie because it would be such a huge ginormous wink at the audience.

When Spock made his appearance in 2009, *finger snap* immediate lump in my throat. Shot me right in the childhood memories. That was a magical cinematic moment. A real passing of the torch from as far back in Trek history as we can go, the guy who was there from the very beginning, to the absolutely freshest of fresh-faced actors/versions of a character we've had. One generation shaking hands with another.

So as someone who really did want to see Kirk return, when it would have worked, I agree with JJ. It's got no juice behind it at this point.

What you need for a successful Shatner-Kirk return are two things that just can't happen now (nothwithstanding his extraordinary good health and the workload he has for his age)

1. You need Shat-Kirk in full cut and thrust mode. You need the guy at the top of his game.

2. He needs to have a prominent role in the film.

If he's in nostalgia mode which is intuitive for a cameo or a bit role, it's inferior and unlike Nimoy-Spock, Shat-Kirk is completely unsuited to being an "elder statesman" type. The guy has to be at the thick things or it's all a bit of a damp squib.

I wouldn't mind seeing it, he died a pointless death like a bitch in Generations but I can't envision a plot that isn't a complete Genisys style mess with him involved. The way Spock came into it is about the only way it could've been done and it could've only been done once. I don't think they'd bother bringing in any TNG people as it would just confuse matters.
