Well, for what it's worth
Shatner does make an appearance in Beyond. Granted, he's just in a photograph but still...he finally had his cameo in Abrams Trek

Basically, in the original concept, Spock Prime had some kind of a pendant/necklace thing with a hologram on it that he was carrying throughout the film, and it was revealed in the final moments of the film. Basically, Spock Prime used it as the last push to convince Young Spock that he and Kirk really were close friends.
I love the feelings it instill. Much like Tom Baker's surprise appearance in Day of the Doctor... It just works for me.
From the script:
Me too it's over let it goI'm totally ok with closing the book on the original TOS and moving forward once and for all
Unfortunately his ego is the problem this why he makes comments that keep it goingThe Shat is 85...I think he knows his list days are over
I agree 100%Trouble is Shatner would never settle on a cameo, even as a different character. He has to be in the spotlight and have the scene revolve around him.
He had a great run, time to move on.
Thank you for this it is true JJ was a big time producer before this and he didn't have to do this what he liked as a child means nothing nowWhether the director is a fan of the property being worked on or not is irrelevant.
Kor
Yes let him go I agreeThey could, but why the fuck should they?
Shatner's in his eighties. Let him go.
They should just take a page from Doctor Who and have Shatner play a mysterious old man with unsubtle indications he could be an older Kirk but nothing ever spelled out directly. Have him and Chris Pine share a scene in which they set up the plot for the next movie.
The dude's 85 and last I heard is still in good health. He can easily stick around for many years yet.Shatner is not too far from death, unfortunately, so I think one last goodbye would be appropriate
