Although there is no director signed to the project, Abrams seems to approve of Wyatt. "He's incredibly talented," he says, "and we'd be lucky to have someone as talented as Rupert. But there are things we're focusing on right now before the director, which is just sort of the fundamentals of where the story is gonna go."

"It's too early to talk about details," Abrams continues, "but there have been a lot of really exciting ideas about what comes next."

That would be an interesting choice. But would he be willing to make another quick jump to another blockbuster series?

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

Who's this Rupert Wyatt when he's at home?

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

As long as he's someone who loves making movies as much as Abrams, I have no problem with the choice.

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

As long as the look and feel of the first 2 are maintained then I've got no problem with a new director, I'd like to think they'll keep the format of the pre-credit sequence and make it even more a of a creative, clever little feature of the film like they did with STID. I hate it when you watch a sequel to a popular film and they change stuff like that (Die hard 4 I'm looking at you).

What I'm getting at is imagine a Star Wars film without the writing going into the distance - it wouldn't seem right somehow, and I hope JJ keeps it in for part 7

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

Please this is not the GI JOE guy.

Why cant we get Peter Jackson to direct Trek 3.

Why cant Trek get a high profile critical acclaim director like what star wars is getting now.

I feel like Trek keeps getting Star Wars left overs.

It is not. Rupert is an up-and-comer and his only major film was Rise of the Planet of the Apes which was phenomenal!

This guys knows how to direct a movie and has a pretty keen eye. Personally I'd be very excited if he gets attached.

You're right: it's not. Why bring him up?

I feel like you keep making this same post over and over, and here it all seems aimed at leading away from the topic of the thread. Please don't derail; please don't spam.

Is this post a joke?

The first thing is easy to Google and see that he's not "the GI Joe guy."

Peter Jackson has not shown any interest in Trek that I'm aware of, and I'm not sure his style even fits the franchise, to be honest (which is not a criticism of either him or Trek).

Trek did get a high profile critically acclaimed director like Star Wars is getting now and a lot of people treated him and his team like crap.

And Trek has not now or in the past gotten Star Wars' "leftovers" in terms of cast or crew, so I don't even know what that is referring to.

Really, just an all around nonsensical post.

Anyway, Wyatt doesn't have much of a catalog of films to judge by, but RotPotA was outstanding, so I would have no problem with him taking over directing duties if it comes to fruition.

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

If Abrams produces it, I wonder how much leeway he'd give a director to make any significant stylistic changes to the movie compared to the first two.

That said, Wyatt or otherwise, if Abrams produces, then he probably has considerable say over who the director will be (assuming it's not him) and if he's comfortable with whoever it turns out to be, then who the hell am I to have qualms?

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a great film, and like Abrams' Star Trek and Into Darkness, it got you right in the feels. He'd be a good choice.

Yes, there will probably be lens flares like the first two.

.
Heh, and actually, Star Wars is getting Trek's leftovers, if you're one who looks at that sort of thing (Director/Producer Abrams did Star Trek first, as did Benedict Cumberbatch, who may be in Star Wars Ep 7)

Agreed. In fact, the requirement will be in the director's contract. Only the number of them per ten minutes of film will be negotiable. The director will also have to meet with Abrams before shooting for a primer on how to achieve a proper Abrams Lens Flare (TM).

Agreed. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a fantastic film, and my favorite of all the films (yes, even the original, which was awesome). If JJ does tap Rupert to do the next movie, I think we would be in good hands.

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

I think he's a good choice based on Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

He understands character, knows how to get good performances (even from CGI actors), and knows how to deal with large setpieces and visual effects.

I suspect, and expect, that much of the look/feel of the Enterprise will match 09 and ID, but whomever directs will likely have their own take on many things.

It may be at a different pace, or have a very different kind of story from what JJ Abrams would be comfortable telling, and I'd enjoy that.

Although I love what Giacchino brought to the musical table, there are other composers who could extend the universe further musically. Brian Tyler has some good material, for example (Children of Dune is excellent). Or someone else, such as Patric Doyle.

New blood could expand things in very interesting ways.

You want a taste of a Peter Jackson Star Trek: Take TMP, stretch it out twice as long, make the space walk be the center of the movie, and cap with with a To Be Continued.

Don't forget the musical number.
