Jerry Springer inspired...

Many of our star trek characters seem to have "family" issues. Sarek/Spock for example....which character from any of the shows or movie do you think had the most "COPS" or "JERRY SPRINGER"ish family issues...

Well, there's actually a lot to choose from.

Spock and Sarek didn't talk for nearly 20 years because of a disagreement of career choice. This was added to issues of acceptance because his half-human son apparently carried too many traits of his mother's ethnicity.

Bashier's dad had an illegal medical procedure performed on his son, resulting in shame from Julian, and later imprisonment for dad.

McCoy had an unhappy divorce, separating him also from his daughter, from whom he seemed to be practically estranged.

Sulu was an absentee dad.

Picard also had a cold relationship with his father, and was constantly at odds with his brother. Neither dad nor brother accept or respect his career choice. He then loses said brother and nephew in a fire.

Sisko's mother was actually an alien who possessed a woman who left his dad after he was born. He is raised by a woman who he thinks is his mother, and his father doesn't fill him in until years later when the issue is basically forced. He, of course is widowed with a young son to raise.

Deanna's mom is just a royal pain in the ass, and had lost a child, never telling Deanna that she had an older sister who died.

How's that for starters? I don't know who I'd pick. Probably Spock.

There's also Riker, whose mother died when he was 2 and he left home at 15. Later on, he reunited with his father after not speaking to him for 15 years. Oh and we're talking about a man whose family issues run so deep, he can't even get along with a duplicate of himself.

Then there's Tom Paris, who falsified records and thus estranged himself from his father, Admrial Owen Paris.

BTW, Robert Scorpio, I have to say, your threads often remind me of essay prompts from school. ;) Hopefully I've properly addressed the prompt and supported my positions with details!

Just found this again the other day... :rommie:

:guffaw:GAWD! I didn't realize how SCRWED UP these charactors were/are! I'd pick Sisko's family! It sounds like something right out'ta ''Springer''!:guffaw:THAT'S RIGHT JERRY, MY MOM WAS AN ALIEN, THAT POSSESSED THE WOMAN THAT BIRTHED ME! and my DADDY NEVER TOLD ME!

Kira's mom was a hooker.

Ezri's mom pushed her son into being a murderer.

Data's parents abandoned him. One brother is a sociopath. The other is a retard.

Quark's mom is clothist.

O'Brien's mom actually cooked with real meat.

Kim's parents seems to have raised a boy with an unhealthy attachment to them

Don't forget Riker, he had some serious father issues going on.

So did Tom Paris.

Torres had issues with both parents.

The EMH had weird father issues with his creator.

Worf never really learned how to understand or get along with his son.

Bashir had issues with his parents due to the genetic modification.

Garak, another with weird daddy issues.

McCoy helped his father commit suicide.

Wesley made Picard into a sort of father figure. (I don't know if that really qualifies as a problem though)

Geordi had problems accepting his mothers disappearance/death.

I think I'm seeing a trend.

Seven of Nine was whisked off into the path of the Borg by her obsessed father and apparently pushover mother.

Travis Mayweather faced flack for abandoning the family business to join Starfleet.

T'Pol had Mommy issues.

Trip seemed uncommonly attached to his sister.

Data's parents abandoned him. One brother is a sociopath. The other is a retard.

 Awesome description. I thought of B4 more as a "baby". After I first saw the movie (and deluded myself into thinking it was actually good), I affectionately referred to him as "baby Data". Looking back on the movie and character years later, I think your word is better. This thread makes me think the writers gave all the characters horrible family issues as a crutch, just to give them an excuse to have more to write about, but I guess you could argue it's realistic...a lot of people in the world don't have exactly 'normal' happy, healthy family histories for various reasons.

I guess it's a bit of an irony (but also nicely balances things out) that O'Brien didn't seem to have any major problems with his parents or his family by marriage that I can recall, even though his character was one of the most abused in DS9 with all the "O'Brien must suffer" episodes. Of course he and Keiko had fights like all couples and almost separated a few times, but in general they seemed to be a happy couple with a good family life.

Reading this thread in conjunction with this one: http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=89416 made me smile enourmously.

The Crushers:
Beverly lost her husband, under Picard's command, a man she apparently has feelings for. Her son lost his father under Picard's command and now Picard is commanding the starship he's living and training on, while his mother has a close relationship with the man. Later his mother leaves the ship to follow careeer advancement leaving him behind.

Spock and Sarek would make interesting guests only if one, or hopefully both of them, were in Pon Farr. Otherwise it would be like --

Spock: "You were quite lacking as a father".
Sarek: "That statement is illogical".
Spock: "Indeed".

Sarek: "It was illogical for you to choose Starfleet over the Vulcan Science Academy".
Spock: "The decision was perfectly logical to me".
Sarek: "Indeed, perhaps my opposition was a bit premature".
Spock: "Indeed".

Jerry Springer: "Let's cut to a LONG commercial".

A real snoozefest, unless you're a Trek fan. :)
