Jennifer Morrison as Winona Kirk?

Kokomo

Commander
Red Shirt
IESB is now reporting that Jennifer Morrison may possibly be playing either Marcus (as rumored earlier) or a pregnant Winona Kirk. I am hoping that it is Kirk; that would be awesome!

...Interesting development as such, but it would then be a bit odd that Kirk requires a refresher course in "Balance of Terror" to remember who the Romulans were again.

Naah, Kodos the Executioner killed Winona Kirk, and that's that.

Respectfully, you have maybe missed Matt's point (unless I'm missing something)....
If Nero kills Winona Kirk while she is preganant with Jim Kirk, then Jim would never get the chance to "re-aquaint" himself with the Romulans in 'BoT'.

Wow, this movie sure is confusing, with Chris Pine not playing Chris Pike and Winona Ryder not playing Winona Kirk and whatnot...

I just love the way this movie is fucking with the fandom.

Kudos, Mr. Abrams. I'm looking forward to the reaction to the final product.

For some reason, all I can think of is Winona Ryder and John Crichton's gun, Winona... it's not a bad name, but it is kind of ironic.

Anyway, it makes sense: Morrison - Winona. Ryder - Amanda. Marcus - Nichols. Nichelle - not-appearing-in-this-film.

Kinda.

Where did Kirk's mom suddenly got her first name from, anyway? I had never heard of it before.
From some of the novels which is where Kirk's father's name came from.

Memory Beta page for Winona.

Kirk's father's name was first extrapolated, IIRC, for the novel "Final Frontier" from the canonical name of Jim's brother (ie. George Samuel Kirk, whom Jim always called "Sam".)

So, the name "Winona" is not canon. I wonder why eveyone is referring to the Jennifer Morrison character as "Winona Kirk" then? For all we know, she could have a completely different name in the movie.

Roberto Orci, the Trekkie of the production, is reputedly a fan of the novels. He may have suggested using the names of George Samuel and Winona. Makes sense to me.

So, would using those character names require royalties to be paid to the authors who originated them? Just wondering, in light of all the recent Harlan Ellison stuff.

I keep thinking of Winona Judd. it's a very countrified name, but I guess it's canon and after all, Jimmy Kirk is a country boy...

No. The novels are all strictly work-for-hire; everything in them is owned lock, stock, and barrel by Paramount/Viacom/CBS.
