The Jedi's are an order, a peacekeeping organization. Yes they believe in what one might call religious beliefs, but thats called The Force. Putting "Jedi" as your religion would be like putting "Vicar" as your religion.

You know, aside from referances in A New Hope to the Jedi being a "hoky religion," I don't think Jedi have ever really been depicted as being religious in the movies.
Indeed, if you did look at the Jedi as a religion, it's a pretty discriminating one. Only those with midichlorians in their blood can get in.
Well to be fair, Star Wars never got into the "man on the street" level when it came to religion. So we really don't know if "Jedi" wasn't to the common person some sort of religion. Basically you have the "Jedi", the knights, masters, the padawans, and the "The Order" and then you [conjecturely] have Joe Schmoo on the street that is a Jedi in the since that they believe the same principles and who views the Jedi that same way people [on Earth] view mnisters, priests, bishops, etc.

I went to a comic convention about a month ago and the 501st/Rebel Legion had a panel. I'm not big into costuming, but I was curious to see if they could give any interesting tips or tricks, so I went to it.
Instead, the entire panel was about what you have to do to make a costume worthy enough for them. And it was mostly stupid stuff too. Like if a costume was a particular color shade, it had to be that shade. If it was off, no sale. I was very put off by that.
They were nice, but had a strong sense of arrogance. At one point, they claimed their costumes were better than the ones used in the movie (although, another member then quickly covered by saying that was because the movie costumes are used once, so the effort that would go into making a long-term use costume wasn't needed).
I realize for a costuming group like that, standards are important, but they just go too far.
And they got double Clubcard points for doing it too.
A couple of 501sters used to hang out at the same comic shop that I went too. Arrogance is putting it lightly, in my experience with these two douches. They were more annoyances and jokes than anything else.
One of the guys, young dude early 20s or so, treated it like it was the real military. Went ever with his prop blaster side-arm, kept an Imperial ID on him; the whole 9 just as if he was in the army. Always talked about "reporting to his garrison commander." Thought he was entitled to discounts cause he was an "Officer in the 501st". Whenever he didn't get his way he would "threaten" to tell his "Garrison commander"-- which just got him repeatedly tossed for causing a disruption.
The other one just wanted to hang around and talk about-- like you said-- how much better the 501 costumes were over the movies, or how some replica prop coming on the market couldn't compare to the 501st props, and how he was an "authority" on costuming cause he was 501st.
Eventually they got tired of the comic geeks-- mind you comic geeks, that hung around playing D&D and arguing who would win in a fight between Wolverine and Batman-- telling they needed to grow up and get a life
Not saying all 501st people are like that. In fact, people I know that's had them help with charity events say most of them were wonderful, fun, helpful people.

People like this always weird me out. I can appreciate their enthusiasm, but they're not really helping the cause.
My best friend is the new "commanding officer" of the local Rebel Legion. He's a really nice guy but every time he tries to talk me into joining, it just makes it sound crazier and more unappealing. Like, he was really pushing to add more members so that they could separate off into some kind of sub-unit and have more autonomy from the central leadership or something like that. I just can't fathom having a hobby that is that political and regimented or belonging to a fan group that has such strict membership requirements.
My sister's ex-boyfriend is in the 501st. He's a pretty funny guy, particularly the way he's able to spout off Imperial propaganda about how the Rebels were terrorists who attacked the legitimate galactic government.

I bought enough BA miles with one years worth of clubcard points to get a free flight to Europe and back.
Now they have doubled them I should earn 2 flights every year, just from doing my shopping where I would have done it anyway. Tesco rocks!
