Jaws

Oh, man, you should read the original novel. The Mayor has mafia ties that are forcing him to keep the beaches open, and Hooper fucks Brody's wife.
Perfect examples of why the movie is so much better than the book. None of that had any relevance to the story. Especially Hooper and Mrs. Brody's affair.

Yeah, seems like Benchly's novel has a lot of extra nonsense in it that just isn't needed. Hooper and Mrs. Brody? Silly and out of line.

I think the affair is one of those things that some authors (like not-so-good ones) put in their books to make them seem more 'adult'. Like having a character be an alcoholic for not other reason than to show that this character is 'lost'.
Sorry for using those quotation mark thingies twice in there.

An affair between Hooper and Mrs Brody makes no sense whatsoever.

Spielberg was right to cut it from the movie adaptation.

He got the story down to it's bare bones.

It's Man vs Beast.

Brody vs His Own Fear

Hooper vs Ignorance

Public Safety and Common Sense vs Local Council Economic Interests.

Quint vs Himself.

^ I still remember reading that Peter Benchley hated how the movie was changing parts of the novel and Spielberg had him banned from the set.

I also remember (it was about the time of I believe the films 30th anniversary) that a remake was being planned by never came to fruition.

Benchely obviously didn't understand that big difference are pretty common between the book and the movie.

If Spielberg had him banned from the set, that must have occurred later in filmking, as Benchley himself is the reporter on the beach in an early part of the film

Jaws is a great movie (for what it is).

And it's blasphemy to say pretty much anywhere, but I really like Jaws 2 as well.

Jaws 3-D and Jaws the Revenge (not to mention the spiritual successors Deep Blue Sea, Open Water, and Open Water 2) are utter trash, though.

A really great movie IMO.Can you just imagine how awful any remake would be?Studio execs wouldn't tolerate a quiet, dialogue heavy scene like Quints Indianapolis speech. It would probably be replaced by a gratuitous lesbian scene between the "reimagined" Quint & Hooper, now both babes. The shark(cgi of course) would turn out to be an aquatic alien life form or some stark harbinger of envoirnmental doom.

I like both the movie and the book for exactly what they are. Hooper gets eaten by the shark for his transgressions, as he was originally supposed to have in the movie.

Man, Jaws now that one has some special memories. I saw back in 88 (89?) in the middle of a late night movie marathon on some cable channel, Jaws, Heavy Metal, and Rock and Rule, Vampire Hunter D, and Transformers, back to back no commercial interruption except between the movies, unedited.

Great...thriller, wouldn't call it horror per say.

It is the best movie of it's kind ever made. Also I would say it's one of the best movies ever made on so many levels. It was even used as an example as great directing when I studied film studies.

If I were to compile a list of my top, oh, 25 movies Jaws would certainly be on that list. It may even be in the top 10.

Trekker - do you mean to say that you've only recently seen Jaws for the first time, or that Shark Week inspired you to watch it again?

I've had the special edition DVD for quite some time. Infact, I have two of them as the first time I bought it I accidently bought the Full Frame version (why they make Full Frame versions of movies, let alone Special Edition Anniversary versions of movies, let alone SPIELBERG allowing a Full Frame video is beyond me.)

I saw it "for the first time" in my adult life a couple of years ago. Before that I had been a kid when I last saw it so I had either not picked up on, seen, or remembered many details in it.

Shark Week inspired me to put the DVD in last night a watch it again, but everytime I watch it it's like watching it for the first time. It's just such an amazing movie.

I'm watching the SE's 2-hour "making of" movie right now.

JAWS 2 is pretty good too.

JAWS 3 and JAWS The Revenge are diabolical.

But I still watch them from time to time.

LOL

It did occur late. When they were filming the climax Benchley objected to several things that they were doing, so Spielberg had him removed and told him not to come back.
