News Jason Isaacs Joins Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Lorca

I think discovery is going to be a very good series. I wonder if at that time they wear TOS miniskirts?

I've wondered, too. I think when it's part of a modern retro look like the JJverse I don't even mind too much. I think the uniforms in the JJ movies look pretty cool.

As I've pointed out before going the Rogue One way of casting a woman in the lead but then casting all or almost all other roles with the tired old "male by default" strategy isn't reasonable representation.

I think there's a study that shows that whenever women reach a representation of 20% in any field, men feel that there's now equal representation.

Must be a 'white male syndrome' thing

If we ignore the sexual objectification that was inherent even in Seven's ridiculous clothing I'd agree. Seven turned out to be a pretty good character.

Yes, her outfit. They would have never put a male actor though this, just to make him look sexy.

At least Marina Sirtis didn't have to go though quite like this, although they objectified her, too.

Personally I very much doubt we'll see skirts in DSC. I think this show won't have as much of a retro feel that some people are hoping for.

In the 22nd to 24th centuries, human culture will have flashback moments of sexism as reflected in Starfleet female dress codes. Something about 'effective diplomatic relations' with the Orions was used as an excuse.

Yeah, I doubt it, too. But I really wonder if they'll take some visual cues from TOS or just go the Enterprise route of doing things differently. Gritty and practical instead of stylish. Not sure I like that. :p

I hope they go sleek and stylish. I really like ENT's aesthetic because I think it makes contextual sense. But I want DSC to be more futuristic.

Yeah, apart from JJTrek we haven't seen stylish and futuristic Trek since TMP. :( Say what you will about TMP but at least it was a real scifi plot and the set design was clean and stylish. Unlike all the navy in space nonsense we got starting with TWOK.

I will say what I will about TMP and it is this: It's amazing and beautiful and completely underrated.

Sure, but that's the KT and it's separate from the tv shows. It's its own thing. And the creators of DSC can go anywhere and do whatever they want. They really shouldn't be beholden to anything other than their own passion for their story, characters, and aesthetic.
I put it as an example because that is the modern version of the uniforms of the 60s

I think that at that time those uniforms were transgressors were against conservative society. Time of female liberation. At this time is frowned upon because for the new feminism is to sexualize the woman etc

But Starfleet is The Navy in space...

I know that the TOS female uniform convention was the skirt. Frankly I don't think that matters at all though. The creators of DSC should do whatever they want with the uniforms. Adherence to canon is, as I've said elsewhere, a straitjacket on creativity. A little canon adherence is fun and interesting. But too often it's just suffocating.

And let's tread lightly with blanket comments about what feminism is and what it means for female representation in media.
