Japan hit by 9.0 earthquake.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

6.1 quake off Tonga...

The whole Pacific rim must be having a shift session. With Christchurch in Feb, Papau New Guinea not too long ago, China last week and now Japan and Tonga.

the entire region experiences thousands of earthquakes every year.

the unique nature of the 2011 Sendai megathrust earthquake http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/usc0001xgp.php is that it follows just two (2) days after a tremblor with a moment magnitude of 7.2 http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/usb0001r57.php seismologists expected Sendai to be less than 8.5 and nowhere near the measured 8.9 - 9.1.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Out here in the Bay Area, ferry services were canceled early in the day. I also heard massive traffic jams along the coast in Half Moon Bay. But the effects of the the tsunami were negligible.

I wouldn't say that, There was some damage in Santa Cruz I heard and one guy died because he was an idiot*

*I don't mean to be insensitive, but what happened was this 25 year old wanted to take photos of the Tsunami and got washed away in the process. I hear stuff like that, and I just have to wonder. Still, sucks that he died so young but it was such a waste.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I'm hoping the Cascadia fault line doesn't join the party.

Yeah...the 1700 earthquake was really, really bad.

I'm hoping this doesn't ripple all the way to the New Madrid. Talk about an area totally unprepared to handle an earthquake as strong as what's hit it in the past...

But right now, my thoughts and prayers are with the people of Japan. What a horrible, horrible disaster. :(

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

It's not over yet. We had another 6.8 aftershock about two hours ago, and there have been well over 100 aftershocks since the big one yesterday. And yesterday shortly before the 8.9 quake I saw the crescent moon above, barely noticeable but with its significant tidal pull on those fault lines, and of course it's up there now almost in the position it was at the time of the big one yesterday. So we can expect at least some significant aftershocks in the next 5 hours, although probably nothing major. But yesterday we got a lot of strong ones in the few hours after the big one, and people in my neighborhood were outside, and we could see the trees shaking and here the houses rattling. Now people around here don't seem worried, but I've got the TV that went tumbling yesterday on the floor just in case.

There's another aftershock. Short one that time.

Like I said, negligible. :p Seriously, that's tragic in a way.

:(

I was thinking about New Madrid, too. If a quake the magnitude of Japan's hit, it would be bye-bye St. Louis, Little Rock, Paducah KY, and there would likely be damage as far away as Chicago. :( Nothing short of catastrophic.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Yeaaah... and since there's a HUGE nuclear power plant in Fulton, MO..... yeahhh..... bad.... Especially since... I live like 40 miles from there

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

emher hope you hear from your sister.

bad news .. still battling the reactors..
good news admist so much horror..
the ferry has been found on all are alive.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

There's now a worry that the reactors have begun to melt.

Over 200,000 people are in refugee shelters.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

The pictures coming in are just mind-boggling. The poor Japanese. It looks like the end of the world there. :(

Yes, it does:borg:
I feel very sad for the people of Japan, nobody deserves this kind of horrible disaster.
This emergency with the nuclear reactors is very worrying..and damn scary. I sincerely hope they manage to get this situation under control..and soon:)

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

She's really okay! Her cellphone had died, but she text-mailed from a friends cellphone this morning that she's fine, her friends are taking care of her, there's no electricity, gas or water, there's still aftershocks. But it seems the tsunami didn't reach her. It seems they're blissfully unaware what's going on in the bigger picture and are just hanging around to see what's going on.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I am concerned about the reports coming out of Fukushima because I have a friend in the area. I doubt she lives right next to the power plant but she may still be affected. I have not spoken to her recently so an attempt to contact her may take a while regardless of what is going on. I hope the situation is resolved quickly.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

^^ Me, too.

I'm glad your Sister is safe, Emher. :bolian:

One report says to get the hell out and another says stay in side and don't use the AC which I think is odd being that it's winter.

Hopefully she is OK and the building that exploded isn't the reactor and that there hasnt been a melt down. A huge earthquake, a 30 foot wave, we don't need to add a nuclear meltdown to the list.
