When I was a kid, I liked to read the dictionary for fun, and of course I liked to look up the "bad" words to see what they really meant. "Bastard" was one I'd heard more than once. It gave me the "illegitimate child" definition, and I didn't know what "illegitimate" meant, so I looked it up and realized it meant "child born to unmarried parents." Fair enough. Well, my cousin was the child of unmarried parents, so I casually asked my grandmother, "Is Diana a bastard?"
She said, "Yes, but that's not a nice word to use, so don't say that again."
And I didn't. I was 8 years old at the time.

It never ceases to amaze me when people who throw out slurs and insults against others for no particular reason try to excuse their needlessly aggressive behavior by responding, "Well, I don't care what you think of me." It's not about what others think of you, it's about the fact that you're doing something that any decent mother -- like mine -- would wash your mouth out with soap for.
No. We're objecting to your words, not an imaginary tone. You are the person who imagined someone else's tone of voice and then falsely attributed an emotion -- "outrage" -- to it.
We are not ascribing to you any tones or inflections, we are explaining to you that the word "bastard" is inherently a slur and is always as offensive as the n-word, or the f-word, or the k-word, and that, as such, there are no circumstances under which it is an objective, clinical term. You insist, even after being informed of this fact, on using said slur. Therefore, you deserve to be called on it.
