January Art Challenge -- Metamorphosis

Mr. Cellophane

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Thanks again for the votes folks!

Ok, this month I thought it would be fun to basically transform any normal commonplace object into one that would fit into the Star Trek universe. You should probably not stray too far from the original shape of the source object. Any medium is welcome for this challenge.

Final presentation should include an image of the object in its original state.

So, raid your garages, thrift stores, etc., and most importantly, have fun!

Just to clarify. Is the idea to use the shape of something to influence what we make? Or the function? Or both? As in basically taking an everyday item and making it look "trek-ish"? Salt shakers for medical instruments? Everyday objects re-purposed? Where is the line drawn? (yeah, yeah, "here and no further")

We were discussing the details in the voting thread. It has to be the same type of item, or at least serve the same function, in Trek context. So a 20th century...say...dishwasher, would be some kind of (de)replicator that would remove only the food scraps rather than just beaming away the entire dish.

^ That's not how I read it. Perhaps a clarification or an example from Mr. Cellophane is in order here?

You both basically have what I had in mind. If someone wanted to take a dishwasher and modify it (maybe add computer interface panels to it, give it a paint job, or light it up, etc.) to look like it would belong and and function in a similar capacity in the trek universe they could do that. However, if you wanted to turn a salt shaker into a medical instrument, you're more then welcome to have fun with that.

No starships though. The perceived size of the object in the end result should remain the same as the actual size of the original object... if that makes any sense.

Hopefully that helps! I tried to make it a fairly open challenge.

So my ceiling fan spacestation and car/shuttle mash-up aren't eligible? Bah! I do have an iPhone with an LCARS style interface though...

So does my cellphone acting as a tricorder count? Or did ptorp automatically disqualify me with his comment in the the "last chance" thread?

I mean it's really no different then a garbage can acting as a future garbage can, is it? Or am I missing the idea of the contest?

^I read that comment as meaning flip-phones to communicators, ala TOS. Besides, you took a phone and made it into a PADD/tricorder thingie, not a communicator. Follows the spirit of the contest IMO, anyway.

Just need to put pix of the original and the modded versions in some form of presentation, send to ptrope_at_gmail_dot_com before midnight on the 31st and it'll be all good. :)

Maybe the new contest theme should be to design an automatic poll-posting system? :p
