Yeah, and it was amusing for me to read those threads when I had advance knowledge of the contents of Before Dishonor. It was very hard for me to resist dropping hints about what was coming.

As already said up thread, when does something like the death of Kathryn Janeway stop being a spoiler and becomes a fact! I personally read the novel back in November 2007 and now it is January 2009 I find it hard to think why such an event should still be counted as a spoiler!

There is no "statute of limitations" on spoilers. The title was left there because the title of the book is not in the thread title. Had the title been "Janeway dies in TNG: Before Dishonor" then I'd be more for changing it.

That would seem a logical time frame as I was thinking about this on the bus home and say, if someone new had come to Star Trek and was watching the films, would explaining why The Search for Spock is untitled such be counted as a spoiler when asked? Or revealing the aliens in First Contact which Riker and Co are saying will pass through the solar system are in fact the Vulcans! So counting those two examples being called spoilers in my eyes are ridiculous as they are from films which are 25 and 13 years old respectively but under the non "statute of limitations" that exists here, they do in fact count as spoilers if revealed.

About a year, I think, makes sense to me.
I'm extremely thankful for the spoiler policy, though, as I haven't yet read Destiny but I still post here a lot, and aside from the fact that it's a Borg invasion (which was in all the publicity and I knew ahead of time anyway) I still haven't been spoiled on anything.

I had a voice mail from my local bookshop yesterday saying he had it in. I was in bed all day yesterday with a damn cold so I thought, I've waited this long, I'll wait another day. Anyway, I catch the bus home this afternoon and because everyone is playing silly buggers on the roads because of a very very very small amount of snow the bus is late in getting me into town and thus the book shop is closed! Hopefully I'll pick it up tomorrow.

For novels, I think it's fair to say that not everybody has read every relaunch series and a lot of people start these very late. The main reason I stay away from this place most of the time is to avoid spoilers while I'm still in the heart of the DS9 relaunch (currently at World of DS9: Cardassia.)
This particular thread was a little bit of an in-your-face spoiler and I saw it from outside the forum via most-recent thread (I've read Homecoming, future Voyager novels are a bit far down on my list). I'd have rather not known this, but oh well.
Anyway if anybody was going to kill Janeway, Peter David gets a pass... so much for a Voyager movie!

To clarify.
I was not talking about spoilers for anything other than Trek Literature. Though, yes, I realize now that I was completely unclear about that when I posted.
Rosalind and I have never discussed any sort of official policy on spoilers, and I think that's probably because we'd rather not have one. For as long as I've posted here (about four years) and I'm sure longer than even that, basic common sense and courtesy about spoilers (even with books that are very old) has been the norm and I know that I would rather keep it that way, rather than try to implement some awkward and arbitrary policy about exactly when rampant spoiling can occur of a book. Sure there will be various situations that arise that may need to be taken on a case-by-case basis (such as this thread's title) but generally most people can read the forum without being accidentally spoiled about books (even old ones) that they plan to read in the future.
I think a basic rule of thumb is: When in doubt, use spoiler coding or some method of warning people that you're spoiling a book. There are things that are very blatantly well known (like say the ending to Romeo and Juliet) that clearly don't need spoiler warnings, but if we're talking about a Trek book and someone wants to compare it with say a Star Wars book that came out two years ago, I think in that case using spoiler code for the Star Wars book wouldn't be too much to ask.
As for this thread's title specifically... There really would be no way to completely avoid it. The original poster knew Janeway had died somewhere. There is no way to ask that question without stating that Janeway had died. Sure one could have said "Question about Janeway" but that title wouldn't prevent people who didn't want to know that she died from clicking on the thread and finding that out anyway. Plus with the title as it was it was possible that she hadn't actually died and thus it wouldn't have been a spoiler at all. (Indeed I contend that she didn't die given how the book ended.. yes I know that's a matter of major debate.)

Janeway had a history of jumping into situations she was unprepared for, damn-the-consequences, damn-all-advice-to-the-contrary. It was about time that she finally bought the farm as a result of that sort of behavior. They're still supposed to be humans, not superheroes, aren't they?
^ I'd like it made clear that I have no "Janeway Hate." I simply created the avatar as a riff on the previous Tucker "Not. Dead." idiocy from a few years ago.
