Janeway Dating Lyndsay Ballard... The Heck?

Yes, the subtext was clearly in favor of Harry and Ballard.

I would never have thought of anything between Janeway and Ballard, frankly. It was just reading that tidbit in the wiki that made me go :wtf: and then going back to that scene that made me go... 'huh, subtext but not'.

Yeah I too was puzzled that they included that as a notable episode. Perhaps they just need a bit of editing, otherwise a very interesting article.

I can't say as I thought there was anything going on there when I watched it (which is odd because I notice lesbian subtext in everything, even when there is none) but maybe if I watched it again I might think so. Lately I've been thinking Janeway's smug looks could double up as suggestive looks (especially when Seven is nearby).

Actually, back in the day, there were three major shipper schools for Voyager:

Janeway/Chakotay - J/C
Janeway/Seven - J/7
Janeway/Paris - J/P

But, it's Kathryn Janeway we're talking about here, so there were all kinds of shipper possibilities. Rule 34 and all...

I've seen:
Janeway/Neelix
Janeway/Torres (I'm okay with this one)
Janeway/Kim
Janeway/Chakotay/Paris
Janeway/Paris/Kim
Janeway/Entire Senior Staff ()

LOL There are loads vids all over YouTube of compilations of Janeway and Seven scenes.

If you showed them to someone who had never seen Voyager they'd definitely think something was going on.

These are still the major shipper schools in the Janeway fandom, although probably not so much for the show as a whole (you'd have to throw P/T in there somewhere at least.)

As for that last one... can't say I've come across that one in my Internet travels. Is that what's going on in the conference room after the senior staff meetings are over?

Oh! And as for the Ballard = Mary Sue thing, I dunno. She was ridiculously cute, smart, funny, everyone liked her, etc. Mary Sues are always "super special;" that's why they get the praise they do in stories. Plus she went on a "date" with the captain and got to air out her grievances, which wasn't something we ever really saw outside the senior staff. I guess it doesn't really fit the definition, but bear in mind I'm pretty sure I last saw this episode when I was still in high school and a bit more of a moron. :)

And of course I'd want a romance with Harry Kim. Ya'll are haters. :)

I've always said Janeway's "looks" at Seven were subtext.

But, I'm also an ardent J/7er... :shifty:

Me too but I don't think you have to be a J/7er to notice the subtext even my mother admitted the J/7 subtext in Voyager Conspiracy and she thinks they have a more mother/daughter relationship. :vulcan:

I think Janeway does have a saucy way of looking at people, no wonder there are so many different shippers. I think I only see what I want to see, which is why I never got J/C.

You left out my fav shipper... a few years ago I read a fan fic that shipped Janeway and that prehensile plant.

Hmmm.

Actually, IIRC, that should have been J/PHP/Chak.

As has been mentioned above, Janeway does tend to "seduce her staff" to do what she wants them to do. I think that's why there are so many pairings other than our personal favs.Without the words, much can be inferred just by watching her interact with Kim, Neelix, Tom, Kes and even more so with Chak, Seven, Torrres.

Take the scene at the end of "The Omega Particle" when Seven comes into the Davinci holoprogram to discuss "God". Its in most J/7 vids for a reason, because of the meaningful looks/close lean in to her audience that we've seen her use effectively so many times. Its only when the sound is turned on that we are shocked to find the real subject of the conversation. Like someone posted far above, its just a convo between 2 women.

This post summarizes well what a Mary Sue is. Mary Sues aren't "super special" - if a character actually is cute, smart, funny, charming, special and there are good reasons for people to like her, she's not a Mary Sues. Mary Sues are characters that are supposed to be "super special" and adored by everyone, but despite the writer's efforts to convince the audience, they come off as unworthy of all the admiration (for instance, the audience finds them bland, uninteresting, or annoying). Another characteristic is that they are wish-fulfillment characters for the writer. That's why they are so often found in fanfiction, but some canon main characters have also been accused of being a Mary Sue (Wesley Crusher, Lana Lang in Smallville, Bella in Twilight).

Plus she went on a "date" with the captain and got to air out her grievances, which wasn't something we ever really saw outside the senior staff.
Well, how many other crewmembers died and came back from the dead?

If you ever spend two minutes or more in a room with Janeway, you can expect the following to occur:

A) She will stare at you very intently.
B) She will invade your personal space.
C) She will place her hands all over you.
D) She will talk to you while her lips are about a micron away from your face.

Yes, there was a bit of a "joke" JetPP fandom around for a while too, IIRC. :)

As for Ballard, I realize I must be the only person on Earth who felt that way about the episode. I know the comparison wasn't really on target. And Neelix came back from the dead once, and Harry. :) 'Course they were senior staff to start with, so I suppose that doesn't count.

FABULOUS. I even had a dream with Janeway in it once where she did all that to me while we were talking. It was very intoxicating. She does know how to make people feel special and personal and chosen.

There was something going on. I'm positive of it.

Oh absolutely. Before I had even heard of "subtext" I was watching VOY thinking this.

That's fine, kimc... do you remember Janeway/Neelix with his prehensile... erm... appendage?
