James Horner, Film Composer for 'Star Trek' Dies in Plane Crash

The soundtrack for that film has elements he'd use later in the Wrath of Kahn and other projects. It also has elements that sound like they are from The Motion Picture, which Horner did not do, but likely had insperation from.

^^^I believe Goldsmith was a mentor to young Horner.
His Krull score is really good. Should have won an Oscar for Apollo 13.
He'll be missed.

James Horner, John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith: the movie soundtrack giants of my youth.

Being a kid in the '80s wouldn't have been the same without those guys composing music for many of my favorite films.

^^^ Truth. Felt the exact same way. I would throw Alan Silvestri in there, too. His treatment of the Back to the Future films and Predator were iconic 80's soundtracks and then he really cranked it up in the 90's.

As has already been expressed, the "Big 3" film composers to me have always been John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, and James Horner. Of those, only Williams is now still alive. God willing, he will continue producing new scores for many years to come, but the loss of Goldsmith and now Horner is incalculable to the world of music.

Requiescat in pace, Mr. Horner.
