Thanks for the article on classic Trek Dug! it really helped lift me this morning after I saw the ad for the new fim and the tagline now says “this isn’t your fathers Star Trek”. That tag made me feel well…

This is "Kirk" From Phase II. Trekmovie and other supporters for this "Movie" has credit him for giving the thumbs up for this movie! I found his post very funny. :D

James is a good guy, and quite a bit more than "Kirk" in "Phase II" - he's the executive producer, along with a team of volunteers he does an enormous amount of the actual work (set design and construction, costuming, etc) that makes the show possible, and heads up Cawley Entertainment Company which is currently putting together a fully-licensed "Buck Rogers" series for the Internet. Among other things.

Of course he also has a non-speaking part in the J.J. Abrams film (unless it winds up on the cutting room floor, which often happens). He speaks very highly of Abrams and of the experience in general.

A link to "Doug Blog" might be helpful, here. The closest thing Google turns up is "Doug's Blog," belonging to travel writer Doug Phillips.

the comment was about how the movie is being marketed and not about the movie itself.
really the blog wasnt about the new movie but rather doug drexler's work on recreating
parts of tos enteprise for ds9 ect..

cawley is a film maker but maybe he should think through the concept of targeted marketing.
some of the publicity will be aimed at non fans.. others at the fans.
some of it will be targeted for a paticular audience watching certain tv shows.

below is an interview with cawley about his experiences being in the movie and meeting abrams.
earlier interview with cawley from trek web

James Cawley: I did not see any script. I was involved in four scenes, and based on what I was witness to, I think it's going to be a terrific story. I had a number of conversations with J.J. Abrams and the most important one was, what did Star Trek mean to him and what was he trying to bring to it? He told me that it was all about capturing the feel of what it was like to be in the 1960s. What that meant to Star Trek. The message of hope and optimism and diversity. Once he talked to me about that, I thought, he's got a sense of it. The Enterprise can be different, or whatever he's going for physically; the production design can be different, but he's got the heart of what made the show so great. He's got the characters. They're in good hands.
and this..

^^^You hit the nail on the head my friend.....they wont need to target this movie at Trek fans, because every Trek fan on this small globe we call earth will already know about it, but they also have to get those NON Trek fans(yes i know i cant believe there are people who don't like Star trek,), into the cinema as well, and more bums on seats mean more cash, and more cash as always a good idea.

But from what i have seen from all the small clips,i don't think we will have to worry to much about this new movie, i think its going to be phenomenal at the box office.

Nothing says 1960's, like 2009 Apple Store design, and enough lens flare to create a new star with.

Well you managed to completely miss the point of what he said there. What you're imitatively trying to mock about the visuals has absolutely nothing to do with what was said.

And as we all know, making it look like the 1960s will automatically make it feel like the 1960s. Cuz that worked so well for the Austin Powers movies

Yes it did but it looks pretty apparent that today's technology cannot make it look 1960's..if they tried to they failed miserably.

Ummm... yeah, It did... ...but ya had to be there...

I'm not sure if you're being facetious, but I laughed. ;)

JJ wasn't saying he wanted the new movie to look like it was made in the 60s. He wanted to recapture the emotions of the 60s version of Trek in this movie. It's about recapturing a feel not a look.

Thank you someone for finally stating the obvious meaning that many people seem to be missing in here.

My god in heaven, I can't believe people have to have that spelled out. Geezus we need better schools.

Apparently some folks won't be happy with this film because JJ was unable to create an actual working time machine, go back to 1966 to get the sets, props, original actors and production team to create a 60's style sci-fi movie.

Damn Zach Quinto! Why couldn't JJ use a young Leonard Nimoy from the 60s with his old current Leonard Nimoy counterpart! SHEESH! It's like he wasn't even TRYING...
