James Cameron's Incredible Luck

I don't see Cameron as lucky.. he knows exactly what he's doing.

He's a blockbuster director who frequently uses big SFX to make his movies but he uses them effectively unlike Lucas for example whose SFX overpowered his characters and story in the prequels.

Cameron knows how to pace a movie and when to dial it back to let the story unfold. His stories aren't unique or especially engaging and his cast is rarely in the run up for best male/female actor at the Oscars but then they are adequately done and without too many groan inducing moments.

So actually he's a better version of Michael Bay or George Lucas and the boxoffice proves it.

He understands how to use assymetry dramatically. It's one thing to overmatch the protagonist, but to build tension and drama throughout a story as he does is a skill in itself. Ripley, Sully, Connor all are absolutely screwed from the get-go by being pitted against adversaries who can in principle destroy them in an instant without breaking a sweat - yet Cameron plays reasonably fair in how his protagonists win through.
