James Bond franchise--the return of SPECTRE and Blofeld?

I remember thinking at the time that Brosnan just felt a little too lightweight for the role, but since then I've grown to love his Bond a lot more (even if the stories themselves weren't always the best) and really like the swagger and humor he brought to it. And he could also do the dark and gritty thing very convincingly as well, which I don't think he gets enough credit for.

That being said, I do very much prefer the Craig films which actually feel like real films with serious stakes, and not just generic 90s action flicks with Bond inserted into them.

I really like Brosnan but too often he's just an amalgam of all the men who played 007 before him, its hard to define a USP for his Bond.

I respectfully disagree. Die Another Day was an abomination. And I absolutely would never in a million years think to rank it ahead of Casino Royale, The Living Daylights, or For Your Eyes Only. Even Tomorrow Never Dies is better than Die Another Day!

I was definitely not saying it was better than Casino Royale (hell it doesn't even come close), and I also said it was better than "most" of the 70s and 80s Bonds, so for me Daylights and Spy Who Loved Me would probably be a couple of the exceptions (not so sure about For Your Eyes Only though).

And after a rewatch I actually think Tomorrow Never Dies is pretty darn underrated too. The only Brosnan movie that's a bit of a dud in my opinion is World is Not Enough (despite the great parking garage scene).

I enjoyed the first three Brosnan movies. Die Another Day was the big dud, even if it did make hundreds of millions. It started out serious like it was going in one direction, and then it completely went off the track with over the top absurdity.

Over the top absurdity in a Bond movie? I wasn't all thrilled by TWINE either, the plot didn't feel like a Bond movie. Although it was M's best movie til Skyfall.

I thought that GoldenEye was the last decent Bond film until Casino Royale. I'd rather rewatch Quantum of Solace, my least favorite Craig entry, than any of the other Brosnan Bond films (not Brosnan's fault though, because he was always good in the role).

pierce was decent. its like he was a mix of connery and moore. goldeneye was his best. saw twine and dad in the theater. those were fun. but casino royale. hells yeahs. then quantom was decent. skyfall was just 100%. cant wait for spectre. looks like they doing something very good with bond's old arch nemesis.

ranking the bonds:
1. connery
2. Craig
3. pierce
4. dalton
5. lazenby
6. moore

top ten bond flicks

1. skyfall
2. casino royale
3. goldfinger

A wonderful retrospective on the first three Daniel Craig Bond movies in anticipation for Spectre.

He's hyping up the movie. "This could be Craig's last Bond!" is a lot more exciting than "Bond film second to last on Craig's contract."

He'll be back.

I dunno, he's never given the impression he's that happy with the role, and it seems to be the presence of Mendes that has pepped him up during the last two films and Mendes has made it clear this will be his last Bond so maybe Daniel Craig is thinking now might be a good time to bale?

Or for all we know he might do a fifth and even sign on for a sixth, or the producers might decide the time is right to replace him (whatever its faults Die Another Day was phenomenally successful yet they still had no compunction in ditching Brosnan after all)

We'll just have to wait and see.

In other news, the new Bond novel "Trigger Mortis" will be released in a few days, and the writer Anthony Horowitz was asked during an interview, whether he thought Idris Elba would make a good new Bond, and his answer that he thought Elba was "too 'street'", caused uproard online and in the news. Now, in context, he made it clear that it wasn't about colour, but, of course, the internet doesn't care about context.

So, he made a public apology, clearing the matter up by repeating the context:

“I was asked in my interview if Idris Elba would make a good James Bond. In the article I expressed the opinion that to my mind Adrian Lester would be a better choice, but I’m a writer not a casting director so what do I know?”
...
“Clumsily, I chose the word ‘street’ as Elba’s gritty portrayal of DCI John Luther was in my mind but I admit it was a poor choice of word. I am mortified to have caused offence.”

Elba, meanwhile, gave an expectedly classy response:

'Always Keep Smiling!! It takes no energy and never hurts! Learned that from the Street!!'

The white dinner jacket with the red boutonière was originally worn by Connery in the pre-title sequence of 'Goldfinger'.

I actually agree with Horowitz, I've been a big fan of Elba since Ultraviolet, I think the guy's awesome, but I don't see him as Bond. Adrian Lester, yup I can see that, and I could also see David Oyelowo (who's doing the audio for Trigger Mortis) in the role. Hell after Brosnan left I wanted Colin Salmon to be given a go, so I have no issue with a black 007 I assure you, its just whether the actor is right for the role. I mean I like Jason Statham, doesn't mean I'd like him to be Bond.

The other issue with Elba (and an issue which affects several other contenders such as Lester, or Richard Armitage) is age. Even if Spectre is DC's last film by the time Bond 26 rolls around Elba will be around the same age Rog was when he started, if Craig does another Bond, then Elba would end up being the oldest Bond actor at the start.

Now maybe this isn't an issue, all these guys in their forties now probably look younger than Moore did in Live and Let Die, hell it's amazing to consider Connery was only 31 in Doctor No and Lazenby only 29 as both look much older, but the producers have to consider longevity, if they got someone like Elba (or Armitage) are they really expecting another ten year run which will see that person comparable in age to Moore in Octopussy by the end of their tenure?

Its worth adding that I initially didn't think Daniel Craig was right for the part, so its possible I'm talking out my backside with regard to Elba, and if he's cast he'll have my support and I'll reserved judgement till I see him in the role :)

But sod the future Daniel Craig is still Bond and that is an awesome poster!
