"James Bond 23" officially slated for 2012!

(Not gonna lie: Before seeing Quantum of Solace, I was hoping that the then-unnamed organization that had killed Le Chiffre would turn out to be SPECTRE.)

I've never been crazy about SPECTRE. The name (an acronym for SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion) has always been a bit on-the-nose for my taste. Quantum is essentially the same thing, anyways, only with a name that isn't so juvenile.

I don't much care for the longer phrase "SPECTRE" is supposed to stand for, but I'd been hoping it could appear with "SPECTRE" just being its name, not something short for anything else.

It's really very subtle during the beginning, then when the logo pops up it's really distorted like I said above.

That's what I get for sneakily watching it at work :)

Rewatched it tonight (quite a lot of times) and yes I hear it now :)

I wonder what QUANTUM is short for?

The trailer looks excellent...I am psyched.

I love the brief shots of the characters. Frankly, I'm particularly fascinated by the shot of M and Bond looking out over a mist-filled countryside. I'd wager it implies a heart-to-heart between them, as M reflects on the impact of the choices she's made....

Especially in this age of class conflict, I suspect a James Bond movie featuring a cabal of rich plutocrats who seek to subvert the world's democracies for their wealth would resonate with many people.

Don't forget: they fake climate-change-related environmental disasters in order to gain control of the world's natural resources...using an environmental activist group as a front.

As Dominic Greene himself noted, "We deal with the Left and the Right." And the films resonate similarly.

I love how they've treated the relationship between this version of M and Bond.

Good teaser but I didn't really get a "bond" vibe from it. Hopefully I will from the Trailer later this year, and I am still looking forward to this movie. Might need to see Quantum of Solace (and maybe Casino Royale) again though as it's been a while.

^Well...keep in mind, this film will be stand-alone. There won't be any stuff about QUANTUM. Rather like Goldfinger had nothing to do with SPECTERE.

I think that was a good call on their part, particularly given the longer than normal break between QoS and Skyfall.

I'm disappointed Quantum won't be returning, actually. I think it's an intriguing concept that hasn't yet been used to its full potential.

Well, frankly, neither was SPECTERE, particularly, in the first two Connery films--though their role in FRWL was pretty good. Then a break, with Goldfinger....

In Thunderball, though, I think the concept really hit its stride--holding the free world at ransom with the threat of a nuclear holocaust! And in YOLT, they played the two sides in the Cold War to the brink of war.

And then--that was it. The concept crashed after that. *sigh*

(Incidently, Thunderball is probably my all-time favorite of all the Bond films I've ever seen--with Casino in close second....)

I'm pretty sure Blofeld was also "given" to McClory, too. And...Lazenby's Bond discussed SPECTRE with Tracy's father, in their first meeting.

Well Blofeld is seen again in FYEO...or at least some other baldy bloke with a cat is.

Maybe Roger Moore offed Dr Evil?

That probably had something to do with the rights to Thunderball and SPECTRE being given to Kevin McClory.

I don't think Blofeld's organization is referred to onscreen as Spectre after You Only Live Twice. Though I may be misremembering.

SPECTRE is briefly referred to in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. But not to the extent that it is in the previous few films.
