James Arness RIP

Some headline today said that Matt Dillon died. Sometimes I want to shoot these so called journalists that think they are being witty.

Can't say he didn't have a good run, but it's a bit sad seeing all these stars of 50s sf go one after another.

RIP.

Yeah, I agree. But if you consider we're now into 6 decades since the start of the 1950s, it's inevitable.

But Arness had a great run, and that CNN link I posted quotes a letter Arness had posted to his site after he died (so I take it this was no surprise) and it's a great farewell. Not many people get a chance to say goodbye like that.

Im very sad to hear this. One of my favorite western tv shows and Arness is without a doubt one of the most memorable western stars ever.

He seemed like a really nice guy, very thoughtful to his fans. Heres a link to a letter he wrote on his death bed for his fans.

Im kicking myself for not getting a personalized autographed photo from him at his website. I was just thinking about it last month and told myself I have to do it.

Sadly I will never get one.:(:(

RIP JAMES ARNESS.

One of my earliest memories is of sitting with my dad when he was watching a rerun of Gunsmoke. Rest in peace Mr. Arness.

I can relate to that, but it wasn't Gunsmoke for me, here in Europe "How The West Was Won" is such an iconic show and it breaks my heart that Zeb Macahan is no longer with us. Countless reruns and people are always referring to the show in everyday communication somehow. I can't remember the last time i got this sad when a celebrity past away.

When I was a little kid and would stay over with my grandparents, they would pretty much let us watch what we wanted on TV. But there were two exceptions they wouldn't miss: Lawrence Welk, which I hated, and Gunsmoke, which I quickly learned to love.

On radio, Marshal Dillon was honest and fair, but was kind of a badass who was quick to crack skulls or slap leather. On TV Dillon was a lot more reluctant to get violent, and tried to treat even bad guys with understanding. By most accounts this stemmed in large part from the basic decency of big Jim Arness.

I always have to give a little extra respect for those who have earned the Combat Infantry Badge, too. RIP, Mr. Arness.
