Jadzia Dax Transgender?

Although it was never explicitly addressed, episodes like Dax and Facets show Jadzia being uncomfortable with what are the clearly masculine characteristics of her previous hosts, Curzon in particular.
Wrong. In "Dax," it wasn't any masculine characteristics of Curzon that Jadzia was uncomfortable with, but rather Curzon having been an adulterer. Being an adulterer is as much a feminine trait as it is a masculine one.

Care to look at how I use the word "explicitly?"

I saw. You said "never explicitly addressed." For that to be more than just making something up, it has to be there at least implicitly. It wasn't, because in fact Jadzia explicitly stated why she was ashamed, it was because of Curzon's indiscretions [http://www.chakoteya.net/DS9/408.htm]:

DAX: I won't discuss it with you. As for Enina Tandro, yes, I feel the shame of Curzon's indiscretions. When one of my kind stumbles, Benjamin, it is a mistake that's there forever. I can't tell you which part of Curzon Dax couldn't stop himself from acting shamefully with another man's wife. I can tell you that he did love her, for whatever that's worth.

See, I too can use the word explicitly. I already said what I think of being adulterous. It's not an exclusively masculine trait; it's equally feminine.

In that quote as well as the one about the ring, it suggests being alienated from what would be perceived as masculine characteristics in thr 1990s.

Yes, I'm looking for subtext. No, it is not exact. The writers had their era's perspective on gender and sexuality, whether popular or medical, not ours, and they willingly played footsies with various concepts in order to have more flexibility. Nevertheless, Curzon's masculinity was used often to emphasize how Jadzia was different.

In a sense, I guess.

But it's kinda hard for me to see it that way. Curzon and Jadzia are two different people of different genders, connected - and in some ways the same person - purely by the presence of an asexual slug in their stomachs.

an asexual slug

do we know it's asexual? Are there male/female Trills? they must reproduce somehow. The host actually complicates things. If a Human female joined Trill copulates with a Human male and is impregnated, what comes out? or if the Human male is joined, or both? I didn't watch all of DS9 though

You're saying a human woman has been joined with a Trill symbiont and she gets pregnant by a human male? I would say a trill-less human baby comes out. If humans even can join with Trill symbionts.

Trill symbionts breed in pools on the Trill home world. I assume this takes place after a host dies; the symbiont might not have a compatible host standing by right away. Perfect time for a side trip of sorts.

The unjoined Trill hosts are male and female and, based on Ezri's family and on Jadzia conceiving with Worf (with medical help) they reproduce like other humanoids. The symbionts, I don't think they got very specific about whether they were gendered or how they reproduce. It seems like it would be a disadvantage for them to be gendered, because they'd have more difficulty joining with a host of the other sex.

They did say they had a very limited time to move a symbiont from a dead host to a new host. That's how Ezri got joined - no other unjoined Trill around. Perhaps if they are on Trill it's easy to move the symbiont into a pool, which wasn't available on the ship Ezri was on and even putting the symbiont in stasis wouldn't do the trick.

If humans can be hosts, why was Ezri forced to become a host when she had no interest in doing so or preparation for being a host?

I think Ezri was joined because Dax was injured in the event that killed Jadzia. The symbiont was stable when it left DS9, but as Ezri said, it "took a turn for the worse" on the way home, and the only way to save it was to join it with a host immediately.

When Riker was joined, it was a dangerous procedure. He could only be a host for a very short time otherwise he would risk death. Adira came along like 900 years after that. By that time the procedure was considered routine.

Still kind of bugs me, BTW, that Gray never dealt with losing Tal. He basically just blew it off like it didn't matter. You'd think that'd be kind of a big deal...I mean, Jadzia freaked out when she (briefly) was separated from Dax!

do we know it's asexual?

It's a safe bet.
