Jadzia Dax and Sexuality

Joel_Kirk

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
While reading (and just finishing) "Fallen Heroes" I was recalling that Jadzia had a 'healthy'...normal sex life. While we frequently heard of her flings from previous hosts, we also got glimpses of partners who were allowed to enter into a relationship with her. (All the while Quark and Julian Bashir were fawning over her).

Still, at least in the early seasons of DS9, Jadzia still retained a bit of mystery...

I've known (or know) women like that. They don't let anyone in their lives unless that 'other' is on a certain level of consciousness...

I want to compare her with Kirk, but Jadzia doesn't seem to be the 'seductive' type, nor the type to act on any male attention (see the above about Quark and Bashir). However, I would compare her with the female version of nuKirk in the IDW comics who is said to have left behind a lot of broken hearts before her Enterprise assignment.;)

As I recall, Jadzia/Dax had relationships with males, females, and many different aliens. She had her standards, which apparently Quark and Bashir didn't meet.

I remember she dated a guy with a transparent skull once, Doctor Baudet or something like that.

She also wanted to go out with Morn but he turned her down, although that sounds like a joke or maybe she made that up to make Worf jealous.

I really was rooting for Julian and Jadzia back in the day. Funny enough I didn't like Ezri with Julian and wanted her with Worf, she seemed a better match for Worf to me.
I did like that the Mirror Universe Jadzia and Julian were in a relationship. Are there any other alternate reality Jadzia/Julian pairings in the Myriad Universe novellas or anything like that?
I did think there were hints that Jadzia was bisexual besides the taboo relationship with Lenora Kahn. Worf definitely saw Vanessa Williams as a rival, and Jadzia did seem to react to her in such a way that didn't preclude her as a possibility if she weren't already involved.

I would imagine, for a trill, gender wouldn't matter. The taboo was because of the rule about previous host relationships, not due to any gender or orientation issues. I think, if there would not have been a taboo on previous hosts, Jadzia and Lenora would have built a new relationship together.

Just my two bits, of course.

Morn her out early on in the series, Dax told Kira that she found the seven or eight wiry little hairs on his head cute.

I think a joined Trill that wasn't at least a little bit bisexual would go crazy with all those memories of having sex with both genders in his/her head.

Although Ezri did admit to Bashir if it weren't for the fact that Worf came into Jadzia's life she would have entered a relationship with him. I think she must have seen Bashir at first as being immature, arrogant, sheltered, uninteresting, and possibly even shallow. Though it did stroke her ego when she received advances from a man, if she believed they were only doing so because of her outward appearance, she'd find that as a turn off. In time she probably grew to respect him.

I think Bashir was dying to tell everyone about his genetic enhancement and that's why he compensated by being overly chatty and even pompous at times.

Can't imagine why. ;)

As for Jadzia: She obviously likes to party. Kobayshi makes a good point that I hadn't considered, though, about joined Trills being more likely to be bi simply because of their memories of male and female hosts (although it's probably not that simple - just because a Trill might remember stuff like this from past hosts, doesn't mean they would necessarily still like it).

And I thought Jadzia was perfect for an old stooge like Worf. They really brought out the best - and, sometimes, worst - in each other. Plus, the "Klingon bachelor party" episode was bloody hilarious. So I don't see why people keep ragging on Jadzia/Worf, because I thought it was brilliant.

Personally, I think that Change Of Heart is great., even the B-plot is quite good. (Quark distracting Bashir by talking about Jadzia was masterfully executed).

I think that the Trill probably never had any taboo against same sex relationships, so they're more open minded in general. Jadzia was probably bisexual even before she was joined. For what it's worth there's been at least three gay Trills that I can think of from the novels, not even counting the ones that are hinted at on tv.
I see no reason to assume that aliens would have the same prejudices against homosexuality that exists on Earth.

Agreed. Hell, I find things confusing as a pansexual, myself, and I only have one life in which I've lived.

I can't wait for the day that Earth's prejudices against homosexuality are nothing but an unpleasant history.

Or they could have prejudices about things we consider completely normal. There's no reason why all differences should be positive ones.

I'd expect there are prejudices in their past, but in the idealistic Federation, those things should be behind them.
But there's a lot of prejudices seen in Trek. Vulcans in ENT and TOS show prejudice towards humans and are prejudiced against Vulcans who mind meld for example. There is an extreme bias against joined Trills taking a lover from a past life, that could be seen as a kind of prejudice.
Ferengi culture is incredible sexist. The Bajorans before they were enslaved by the Cardassians had a rigid caste system that was definitely classist. The race in The Outcast were prejudiced against anyone who exhibited gender.

I think that Jadzia always saw sex and friendship as two different things, and realized that sex can destroy a friendship. She wasn't willing to mess up her great relationships with Bashir and Quark with sex and romance.

Worf, she had completely different feelings for. As for Ezri's line about it being Bashir if Worf hadn't shown up.... Yes, I think Jadzia realized the potential. But that doesn't mean it would have worked out in the end, and that's what stopped her. I've known women throughout my life that I fell in love with, but didn't feel the same for me. Being older now, and looking back, most of them would not have worked out at all.

Bashir and Quark..... they were never in love with Jadzia, they were in lust. They saw all the great things a relationship with Jadzia would offer, but never thought about the hardships, the things that didn't click between them. Jadzia saw those things, the things she couldn't deal with long term. Quark's greed, Bashir's overcompensating. She saw through Worf, and realized that the ego was hiding other aspects of his personality. That was never true for either Bashir or Quark.

As for the casual sex..... We see the same things here on Earth, and we judge others for it. Both ways. People who are against it judge those who do it for being slutty, and those who are for it, judge those against for being narrowminded. We all judge.
