If you want to discuss feminism then start a thread. I'd be happy to post in it. As far as I'm concerned, calling people sexist and entitled without justification is far more unacceptable than non subtle sexual innuendos

I haven't, but I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, anyway. An unfunny joke is, by definition, a lousy one. The whole point of jokes is to be funny.

No it isn't. Unfunny jokes (such as Christmas crackers) are designed to make everyone groan. The point is to have a shared moment of disappointment ( which in itself can be funny)

If that humor comes at the expense of people who don't deserve to be denigrated in such a way, it's at least worth considering whether getting one's yuks is worth the price of being a crappy human being.

Good jokes punch up, not down. Men making crude sexual remarks about women has a long, nasty history. Men have traditionally gotten away with it because there was little women could do about it.

That's your opinion, you are not the boss of humour (thank God) and I'm sorry but a woman being referred to as sexually attractive is not sexism. Sexism is believing that a woman is only a sexually attractive object and nothing more. There's an entire thread about Janeway being sexy. Nobody on that thread is suggesting she doesn't have other dimensions to her existence beyond being sexy. The fact that you can't separate the two is disturbing. Viewing women as sexual beings is not sexism. Never has been, never will be

Calling it "innuendo" gives it too much credit. It's quite obvious what was intended. It was a cheap, lazy sex joke.

Again, your opinion. I'm still not sure why your opinion on humour is more worthwhile than anyone else's. When I don't find something funny, I feel no need to comment. Not my cup of tea. So what? When I read a post that is so profoundly tedious that it offends me, I ignore it rather than demand that people meet my expectations for entertaining posts

People are free to make whatever jokes they like, but maybe folks should aim higher and find appropriate targets for their humor, instead of going for the cheapest, basest riffs imaginable.

It's a shame some people don't want any quality in their humor.

Rubbish. Innuendo is an intentional double meaning; the sexual content is deliberately implied, it's not the "fault" of the person doing the interpreting if there's only one intended hidden meaning.

Gibberish innuendo can be intended. Innuendo can be accidental. Innuendo can be interpreted differently (ask Janeway7trulv, she interpreted it without the double entendre)

When someone yells "Fire!" In a movie theater, do they actually trample anyone themselves?

Granted thats an extreme example, but it's cause and effect, man. That type of humor tends to be inciteful, and is made with that effect in mind.

This is why the joke was bad.

No one said "Staff" in any of the immediate posts before "he" started talking about his penis.

There was no context or graduation into tawdriness.

But even then, "I want to #### Jeri Ryan" is implied in every other post by every other poster because she is an iconic sex symbol, or at least Seven of Nine was, and Jeri was just one of the hands up (the character) Seven's ass making her mouth move.

Personally I wouldn't mind boffing the character or the actress if I had to, but neither one of them breaks the top three hunded of women I'm thinking about thinking about list.

Very low priority for me.

If you've been away from a thread for a week, or the other posters have been really motoring while you had lunch, the board functions take you to the last page that you were on. In this case 4 pages behind the pulse of the conversation. Although Janeway Rulz statement was at the top of the page 13 and not the bottom of the page 13, which is how people are usually tricked by this board quirk to think that they are replying directly to the post above which is actually 4 pages ago. Although if somebugger edits their post half down page 15, the post at the bottom of page 15, can sometimes be turned into a post at the top of page 16.

Still not funny.

But now reasonable and understandable.

Manipulating words is cleverish.

Even if it is just to make something not about a penis, to suddenly be about a penis.

If the photo suggesting that Seven and Janeway are ####ing is not offensive, when they are not ####ing and will never ####, then how can a man who wants to #### Jeri Ryan be more offensive for saying that he wants to merely flash her? And even so he probably wouldn't want to flash her if the opportunity did present it self, he just had to say that for the word play to make sense.

Kate Mulgrew took her role as Captain Janeway seriously. She wanted Janeway to be respected and to be evident that she had been given her captaincy at a young age based on merit and not on her gender or sexuality. She wanted the captain to be a role model for women and girls. That's why she was vocal about not having a romantic relationship with Chakotay or any other member of her crew. It was then, as it is still now, inappropriate and conduct unbecoming an officer to have an affair with a subordinate. Kirk or Picard could get away with shipboard romances, but not the first woman captain.

Mulgrew has spoken about the negativity of the mostly young men who view sci-fi shows to the decision to have a woman captain (there were even death threats). She has said that during the first year of taping there would be several network executives in the back of the set observing everything.

Therefore, it must have seemed like a slap in the face to have TPTB decide that the show needed some T&A to sex up Voyager. Hiring a former beauty queen and firing Jennifer Lien did not help matters. Having said that, Jeri Ryan turned out to be an adept actress and made Seven of Nine an iconic character, but I don't blame Mulgrew for being upset.

If you're talking about me making offensive jokes in other threads, sure probably made quite a few. About fiction.

A line is crossed when you're targeting the actors. I would have completely ignored this brouhaha if the meet my staff deal had been about 7. Probably would have replied with a reminder about how the Borg remove unnecessary organs.
