J J Abrams New Star Trek and VOY (spoilers)

Did anyone else notice what a total steal of the plot of "Year of Hell" the new Trek movie is? And isnt it amazing how much better it works in YOH?

I don't think the parallels are quite as pronounced.

Nero's not trying to restore the original timeline, he's trying to screw with it for maximum revenge. And Nero didn't really bring the death of his family upon himself through messing with the timeline, as Annorax did.

But I would say that Annorax was a more compelling villain than Nero. OTOH, I'm glad that this new movie didn't hit a reset button, as YOH did.

I don't see it.

Nero doesn't precieve time as his enemy like Annorax.
Nero unlike Annorax isn't the cause in the time change.
No reset.

Also, Year of Hell dealt with the question of is it morally okay to commit mass genocide to save one species (person) while...

...the new movie deals with what happens after a mass change in the timeline takes place.

Working... and playing World of Warcraft, Anno 1401 A.D., and Assassin's Creed. I've kept myself busy. Oh, and I got engaged. The better half tends to demand my time.

BUT, with the new Trek movie, she's giving me room because now all I want to do is talk Trek, and I need other ner... fans in order to do that. So, here I am! Good to see you're still here Exodus. :)

Sorry, that was WAY off topic. Two days back, and I'm going to get a warning...

Anyway, something else that occurs to me about this. Time travel has long since been a very regular staple of the Trek diet when it comes to story lines. If anything Voyager ripped the idea of Year of Hell what if's from TOS. If Kirk saved what's-her-name, the timeline would be ruined... yadda, yadda, yadda... I can't even say YoH did a better job.

Don't get me wrong. I loved that two parter. Janeway kickin' ass, going crazy, rampaging... did it just get warm in here? *clears throat* But, this movie has no reset button and now, unlike any other time travel Trek story, we get to see what happens after everything is changed.

It's an exciting time for Trek.

"City on the Edge of Forever"

Great example.

BTW, Engaged!!!
Much congratulations, that's wonderful news!!

You go, wit yo bad self!

Well I double-checked the rules and engagements aren't against board policy. Besides, with the "paperwork" involved you're going to have to try harder if you want a warning. ;)

Oh, and congrats btw. Another single bites the dust... ;)

Oh yes, I do remember the paperwork... yay for the lazy! :techman: Thank you for the congrats.

I did notice the similarities between "Year of Hell" and the new TREK movie. And as much as I had enjoyed the latter, I do believe that "Year of Hell" was better written.

Sure, the movie put all the past Trek catalog on a reset button!! While I enjoyed the movie. Its a cop out (still can be a good idea) to start afresh without making the effort to reconcile continuity and consistency with previous Trek material.

The movies and YOH double partner share a vague similarity. But the YOH had more depth and was richer. The opening sequence also reminded me of YOH when I first watched the movie in the way dada Kirk rams the enemy ship.

But, this movie has no reset button and now, unlike any other time travel Trek story, we get to see what happens after everything is changed.

That movie NEEDED a reset button plot device. The alternate timeline presented in the film was not well written. Kirk goes from cadet to starship captain within a few days? Spock and Uhura in a romance? Chekov a full blown commissioned officer at the age of 17, when it has NEVER been hinted that he was a genuis? Give me a break! What the hell was Abrams thinking?

The Enterprise is the flagship for the Federation. You have to be the best of the best and top of your class to serve onboard it.
Abrams was given the characters more depth. TOS had what, 79 eps. In all that time and in fims, what did we really ever learn about Chekov or Uhura? All we ever knew was Chekov had a temper & Uhura could sing.
Wesley was younger than that serving on the bridge(how old was Nog when he got a field promotion?) and Kirk was well beyond retirement and still serving as captain.

I think that the movie was OK when it comes to pure entertainment and action.

But there were events in the movie which I simply can't accept and therefore I refuse to see the events in the movie as anything else than events in an alternate timeline, not the real Star Trek timeline.

Since it was made clear from the *very first scene* that this was going to be a history-changing villain, and since they didn't push the reset button, and since both Spocks said on more than one occasion that this is now an alternate timeline, I think it's safe to say...

It's an alternate timeline.

It's just the only one you're going to see onscreen from here on out.

So wait, are you saying it's an alternate timeline?

I dunno, making a good movie?

You mean, exactly like they said it was in the movie itself? It is an alternate reality. They said it in the movie. They said it in interviews. What people need more to be convinced of it?

Edit: thanks to teya for pointing it out quicker and more clearly.

Well, that spares me from having to waste my time on upcoming movies and books. Besides that, I need my money and the time I have to buy and watch DS9 and TOS (note, the real TOS) on DVD:s, including the TOS movies (the real TOS movies). Not to mention re-watching TNG and seasons 1-3 of Voyager on DVD:s.

And I'm really grateful to the phenomenon called fan-fiction! :bolian:

Not to mention NCIS, the only decent show to watch these days. :techman:

Lynx...they said it's an alternate timeline for this movie and its subsequent works (books and presumably movies). That doesn't mean every Trek book will now follow this timeline. Those books in the TNG, VOY, DS9 and ENT series will go along the same as they are now...
(including a still existant Vulcan and so on)
...so long as people continue to buy them. But those that are intended to be sequels to this movie and this crew will follow this timeline.

I'm sure they're going to revisit the 24th century in books.

As for the films? Well, your loss, quite honestly. I love the new cast. They made me laugh.

And they made me cry...

I'm just grateful that there *will* be more Trek on screen.

Thank you, JJ Abrams. :)
