I've never played a Star Trek game. Where should I start and what games should I look out for?

I've seen some gameplay of 25th Anniversary, Judgement Rites and A Final Unity, but I've never played them. They'd probably be the obvious choices to start with, seeing as they were some of the first few Trek games released to large audiences, but I may be wrong.

Other than that, what games should I look out for and are worth playing?

They're also some of the best games, period. So I recommend them. But, a lot depends on your preferred gaming genre. Those are all adventure games. If you prefer RTS, then take a look at Star Trek Armada II. FPS? Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force II. If fighter combat sims are more your thing, then I'd recommend Shattered Universe. If you want an MMO, Star Trek Online has a few issues but is still better than most, IMO. And if you're willing to go retro enough to look at Interactive Fiction, then I'd start with The Kobayashi Alternative. :)

Cool, thanks.

Really, I'm just looking for good games, regardless of genre.

VOY: Elite Force was a blast. Maybe it isn't "real Star Trek" in some people's opinion, due to the focus on shooting things. But who cares?

I'm not sure if Elite Force II was good. I never got around to trying it. It definitely wasn't as popular as the first one.

There's always the 2013 Star Trek game... I'm kidding. I don't hate anyone that much.

Starfleet Command and Starfleet Command II are very good strategy games.

For the best possible experience off the bat, I would go for Judgement Rites - savor it slowly, and you will find it amazing.

Go back and play 25th anniversary as a prequel if you enjoy it (which you will), but it's not as sharply written as Judgement Rites was.

Play A Final Unity if you enjoy both, but unlike them, you need DOXBox and a bit of luck to get it working, and it has some frustrations (I wish GOG.com would do a proper re-release).

I would say TNG's Final Unity, TOS's Judgment Rites and 25 Anniversary are the best Trek games both point and click adventure games. They truly capture the spirit of the shows.

I am playing through Starfleet Academy right now and it’s also an enjoyable bridge simulator though it was hyped up back in the day and ended up not living up to expectations. Klingon Academy and Bridge Commander were better games but they are not released on Steam or GOG yet.

There is Elite Force as some have mentioned and a few interactive movie games like Borg and Klingon which can be found on Ebay for cheap but good luck getting them to work on modern systems.

Despite some wonky mechanics and an at time unforgiving interface, I would recommend Star Trek: Klingon Academy if you can get your hands on it. It's a space combat simulator and interactive movie that acts as a prequel to Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Christopher Plummer and David Warner even reprise their roles.

Oh, yeah. Especially if you modded the game to use the fire-while-cloaked bird of prey in multi-player mode.

Elite Force looks like fun. Maybe they should make a new one. And Armada III would be cool.

I love the two Elite Force games. I played Star Trek Online for a while and enjoyed it, until I got stuck and got distracted by other games. So if you like kind of games I would recommend thing. EFII is my favorite of the bunch.

I think I'm one of the only people who actually likes the 2013 game. It wasn't anything amazing, but I thought it was a pretty good 3rd person shooter, with a decent story.

I'm a huge fan of both Elite Force games. The first one really captures the feel of Voyager. The second one has more engaging gameplay.

The Fallen is a DS9 game based on the Millennium trilogy (some pretty decent DS9 novels in their own right). It really captures the feel of DS9 and is a fun 3rd person shooter/adventure.

A lot of the best games have been mentioned already.

Elite Force, Armada, Starfleet Command, Bridge Commander, Birth of the Federation, The Fallen, Klingon Academy all come highly recommended.

Oh, and please, don't play Away Team.

I really liked The Fallen, and I wish they had done more with it... expansion packs, multi-player missions, etc. Now I want to go find a used disc on ebay.

I also agree with A Final Unity. I never finished it but I got pretty far as a kid and then a year ago ended up watching a Lets Play some dude had done. I remember just really enjoying going off mission and just flying the ship around to starbases and whatnot.

I'd happily recommend Birth of The Federation too. The (Anniversary, Judgement and Unity) adventure games were well done. I preferred Elite Force 1 to 2 (play wise) and when I'm in the mood (despite its bugs) thought the 2013 game was fun.

It's been a long time since I've played Starfleet Academy (never got the Klingon one) and Klingon Honor Guards but enjoyed them at the time and I like the Starfleet Command games.

I didn't think much of the Insurrection tie in game though.

How much difference is there between the PC and NES version of 25th Anniversary? I only had the latter. I know the PC version would be superior in terms of sound and graphics but is it the same game in terms of plot and gameplay or are they basically 2 different games with the same title? The screenshots from the PC version don't look much like what I remember the NES game being like.

I couldn't tell you much about Trek games Shala, that NES game and Star Trek: Legacy on XBOX 360 are the only ones I can recall playing. I loved the NES game at the time, Legacy looked like the perfect Trek game for me but it ended up being very disappointing and a pain to play.
