I've Got Blisters On Me Fingers!

^Similar to how I feel about fiddle music over classical music. The occasional finger fumble doesn't really matter much in fiddle pieces, especially during double stop laden shuffles. :D

^I play bluegrass cello. ;)

I've started learning Pearl Jam's "Betterman." It has some interesting chords and plucking and I think will really contribute a lot to my education. I can't wait to be able to jam!

^Well, it's gorgeous. It reminds me of the music my dad used to play when I was a little girl. sigh :)

Alright, a week and a half:

It's funny, but I had no idea that not only was this the first song my little sister tried to learn on the guitar while I was away at college, it is also the first song my brother-in-law (married to a different sister) learned!

nice hat!

I think more musicians ought to upload their skillz here! I would love to see what these BBSers can do!
Well, allrighty then! Here's an audio-only one where I get my acoustical fingerpickings on with a tune what I wroted: [click!]

One thing I love about playing guitar is finding different ways to play chords - I broke a wrist when I was younger, so playing barre chords for more than a minute or so gives me hand/wrist pain even to this day. So I long ago started using the alternatives. And open tunings are great, too.

:D

I want to learn "Yellow Ledbetter". I took a quick crack at "Evenflow" to learn the opening riff.

My barre chord exercise is Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard. It includes a lot of switching between the E and the A forms while jumping around between the 5th fret up to the 7th fret then down to the 3rd fret to bring you back to the 5th fret. One time through the pattern and your grip aches right at the base of the thumb on your left hand. This is most people's weak hand, so that is normal. The song takes the pattern about 4 times, so what you do is every day for a week you do the pattern once. The next week you do it twice, and so on untill you can do it 4 times, then be sure to play it through frequently. Which is easy because it's a really fun song.

When I watch Dave Matthews playing I just have to admire how much he can do with barres and wide open chords that slide.

There's also squeezing a rubber ball. You can keep one in your pocket and squeeze it with the left hand whenever you feel stress. It calms you and strengthens your barre chord grip at the same time. :)

^I love that song. I think I'll keep that in mind when I'm choosing my next song to learn!

This is really beautiful -- it is likely because my dad played music similar to this on his guitar when I was a little girl that I find it more comforting than just about anything else in the world. Thanks for sharing!

The freedom is so new to me, but I am loving it!

Very pleasant. Makes me feel all comfortably numb.
Dork.
So long as it doesn't make you want to run like hell.

:D

I think I'm already falling prey to GAS (oooh, that sounds bad)!
Not if it's classical GAS.
There's a song I'd LOVE to learn!
nice hat!
 Maybe I should wear a different one for each video -- I wonder how accomplished a guitarist I'll be by the time I run through my collection!

Now that's a compliment I'm more than happy to receive - thank you!

:D

Owwwwww.....

Just played with my guitar (Ovation electric/acoustic, nice red wood pattern :) ) for the first time in quite a while, and fingers hurt like a bastard now. Guess that's what I get for losing the calluses!

^The tips of my first three fingers are practically numb!

Sooo...I'm learning "Better Man" and had another song in mind too. I looked up the tabs and started playing, but was baffled when what I was playing sounded nothing like the song. Then I looked up a video of the song being played -- turns out I need a capo. Guess I'm going shopping tomorrow!

I had a chance to listen to it. You are fantastic and the recording sounds really good (especially compared to my laptop mic :p).

Thanks! Your stuff is cool, too. :D

The original recording was a little muffled - I used a cheap mic - so I cleaned it up as best I could and EQ'd it in a sample editor. I think I added a bit of reverb, too.

^ Well, I have posted it a couple of times before - once asking for help with the music theory, IIRC - and I assume you're the mudshark who's visited my lastFM page?

:D

:shifty:

Could be.

Well, I got my new guitar today! Full size, and a real beauty. The brand Sherwood, and only sold in France, so an interesting find here. It is a gorgeous burgundy, in like-new condition -- not the highest end guitar but decent quality and I got it really cheap, with a very nice case thrown in! The only problem is that it needs to be restrung. The guy bought it from gave me a new set of strings for it, but I quickly realized that stringing a guitar is not the same as stringing a cello! I've been stringing cellos since I was nine, the guitar -- I can't get the damned pegs out of the bridge!

Anyway, I'll update with a video of my progress soon.

Sounds pretty good, but not quite as awesome as mne.
