I've figured out the flash-sidways (spoilers up to Dr Linus)

All right, so I'm updating my theory after Recon. Really, it's a merging of various theories already posited. First of all, I'm changing my stance to the so-called alternate universe really being purgatory, as in, the characters are dead. Well, okay, still not the Catholic idea of purgatory, but a land of holding for the dead all the same. I backtracked on that before. Now I'm backtracking my backtrack.

Well, this thread was about how the flash-sideways was some sort of afterlife for the characters, and it turns out I was actually almost right. I wasn't right about it being a place where they were being judged, or that they would come back to life from this place, though. But I did correctly guess that it was a holding area for the dead, so I sort of got the "what" but not the "how" or "why".

I'd say you got it pretty much bang-on.

Thing is too, I had completely forgotten about my "flash-sideways are purgatory (haha, tricky writers)" theory by the time we got to Happily Ever After. Once they made it look like they were the cause of setting off the nuclear bomb, as Faraday says in that episode, I went with that and never looked back. I didn't even start picking up on the "they're all dead" thing until Christian asked Jack "the question is, how are you here."

Apparently I'm very easily fooled by red herrings and shiny objects.
