It's Over :(

Four months ago I ordered season one of DS9 on Netflix, and tonight I finished the series finale. Never before have I loved a series this much. The characters, the stories. I had the privilege of watching the series from the first episode with no spoilers, previews, or knowledge of any future events-- making the series all the more interesting. I'm really, really going to miss this show a lot... by far my favorite trek for its complexities, continuity, depth of characters and story and respect for science fiction. I'm glad I was able to watch them the way I have-- it's such an amazing story. As much as I love the other treks, their stories take place in compartments-- collections of mini stories with little flow from episode to episode. Ds9, however, is one story... I loved it.

I've been avoiding this forum up to this point to stay away from spoilers, I'm sure I'll be around now . Finishing series has never been so bittersweet.

Aww you shouldn't have stayed away. We live vicariously through people watching DS9 for the first time. We might tease, but we rarely leave spoilers.

Fear not, Danoz. Watching the series again for the 2nd time reveals even more depth and surprises. Plus, if you're anything like me, upon 2nd watching you'll begin to appreciate some episodes, scenes, and characters that you may not have appreciated before.

An example: I wasn't much of a Bashir fan the first time I watched DS9. The second time through the series, I truly began to appreciate Siddig, and now he's one of my favorite characters.

the last time I fully watched DS9, I liked it so much more than the first time. It was always my most favorite ST show. ENT came in a close second.

I think it's worth noting that the DS9 Relaunch (Or Seasons 8 & 9) from Pocket really picks up the story in a strong and satisfactory way continuing threads/plotlines that were never tied up in the show, introducing new featured and regular characters while giving meaningful continuation to the ones we all love from the show and providing a weighty and complex storyline worthy of it's namesake.

I recently did the same thing, watching the entire show straight through... and then picked up the first Relaunch book the day after I finished What you Leave Behind... and to me it feels like the show and it's characters never ended.

Just my opinion, but hopefully you'll like it as much as I do. It's hugely popular in the TrekLit community.

Something to consider, for sure if you're sad to see the end of the best show Trek has had to offer... and my favorite sci-fi program hands down.

About the Netflix thing... do you get one disk at a time or do you get the entire season rightoff?

Well, the long-answer to that is in the TrekLit FAQ at the top of the page.

The short answer is that, while other stories may take place chronologically earlier, the first official book of the series is Avatar.

I suspect Avatar itself is actually now out of print. But thankfully a massive omnibus is out right now under the title Twist of Faith, which combines Avatar, Abyss, Demons of Air and Darkness and "Horn and Ivory."

Yep. Pick up Twist of Faith... it's a relatively recent release and contains the Avatar I and II, Abyss and the two Gateways stories. It's the perfect place to start and you should be able to find it anywhere. My store, which doesn't do a ton of Trek business, has two copies on hand.

You might also like Prophecy and Change, an anthology from the 10th anniversary in 2003 that fills in some of the rare storytelling gaps in DS9 and looks at some familiar events from new perspectives.

Yeah after WYLB aired on TV, I was in a funk for three days. Never been that depressed over a TV show ending (or depressed about one at all, come to think of it).

I've been waiting to see if any show will ever come along to match DS9. Still waiting.

Agreed. Additionally, you might like the Millenium trilogy which you can get in an omnibus for a good price on most of the secondhand sites (BN.com used, Amazon.com used, Half.com, etc.) which has a post-finale framing story and has lots of interesting Pah-Wraith/Prophets content and Hollow Men by Una McCormick which takes place during the show's run and which is essentially a direct sequel to In The Pale Moonlight (Sisko and Garak get the Romulans into the war) and is a great read.

I still suggest getting Twist of Faith above and beyond those though. There's also a comic mini-series which is terribly hard to track down called N-Vector which fills in the gap between WYLB and Avatar which is worth it if you can find it.

No shortage of DS9 goodness out there.

I recently did similarly. However, I knew there would be a Dominion War in the last seasons. Which, as a spoiler, only made the characters' meaningful glances all the more meaningful everytime the Dominion was mentioned early on.

I'm actually glad I couldn't get into the series during it's first run. It enabled me to watch the whole thing in one fell swoop and get to really appreciate it.

As for watching it a second time as suggested above, I will get to do just that with she-who-must-be-obeyed... if she ever finishes off TNG. (no dear, we don't need dinner tonight, just FINISH TNG!!!)
