IT'S OFFICIAL - STAR TREK OPENS IN AUSTRALIA!!!!

This thing that bugged me the most was like: Okay, first Spock abandons Kirk on some ice planet that is close enough to Vulcan to see it hanging in the sky like the moon... that bugged me. But then he randomly runs into Spock there? That SUPER bugged me! What are the odds they would be dumped in the same spot on this odd planet, and that that spot would be with 14km of a starfleet outpost?

Stretched credulity if you ask me.

Yeah, I thought the movie was great, but that part was rather ridiculous. Also, how long has Spock been there, on that planet? And there just happens to be this Starfleet base with Scotty on the same planet, and it's within walking distance? Oh well. Best just not to think to hard about that part of the movie, I guess.

I assumed Spock intentionally meant for Kirk to land near the base. Stranding him 1000km from no where would be beyond reckless.

OK, yeah, that's a good point. I'll buy that. The rest of it though (running into old Spock there, etc.) is still rather fishy though.

I'm still not quite sure why Spock sent him there rather than just threw him in the brig. Have we ever seen any Starfleet captain in any version of Trek jettison an insubordinate officer, rather than throw them in the brig?

Yeah, that world must have been really close to Vulcan for him to see it like that.

I have some points, I'll make them in the G/D thread. But overall I thought it was pretty damn good. I'm still processing it. But huge huge fun.

And will probably see it again. First time I've done that to a movie in oooo, well over a decade.

Cool :) The whole plot-device of Kirk being in the right place and the right time with Spock senior did actually bug me, but with the explanation provided, I can buy it.

Now, I need someone's help on something more intricate.

*******CAUTION: MAJOR SPOILERS!*******

1. Why is it that Nero had a 25 year head start in the past to devise and execute his plan after coming through the black hole, yet when Spock followed him immediately afterward, he arrives 25 years AFTER Nero? From the looks of things, the difference between their contact of the black hole was merely a few minutes.

2. One more question from that: I don't understand how the time travel was made possible with the combination of the red matter and the black hole.

They are my only gripes with the plot, other than that - perfect!

Just saw it on the Big Screen at Imax in Melbourne (3rd biggest in the world apparently). Frakkin' awesome. Okay it had it's issues but who cares. Sadly I did not stay until the end (and I'm not going back any time soon to see it again) so can someone enlighten me with spoiler code as to the things I missed in the credits?

If it was "Frakkin' awesome" why not go back again?

Closing credits included:
a dedication to the memory of Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett-Roddenberry.

I liked it quite a bit. I just came back from the cinema, so it hasn't fully sunk in yet.

To me, I like that they just went 'fuck continuity' and 'fuck the Trek reset button' went this whole alternate universe route. It's really cool. To use a comic analogy, this is like Ultimate Marvel, to the 700-ish eps and 10 movies worth of original Marvel universe.

There were some flaws, but I wasn't bothered because I enjoyed it so much.

I have been a star trek fan for many years. I stayed away from spoilers for this movie but understood the movie to be a "prequel" not a reimaging or alternative universe, infact at Supanova in Perth last year Nichelle actually corrected my use of reimaging when I asked her what she thought of the new movie. This movie rewrites trek history significantly.
I had no problems with a prequel, obviously the characters had a number of significant events in their history which could have been explored without making significant changes to trek history. I had no problems with Enterprise and found its insertion into history was well done.
The updates in look of technology etc did not bother me and the special effects were good.
From the start I expected a reset button and I am a bit angry that this did not occur.
I have seen every trek movie since VI, 2 to 3 times at the cinema but I will not be returning to see this movie again!

Well I enjoyed it. Planning on seeing it again this weekend. I thought the whole alternate timeline thing was the best way to deal with it, no violation of continuity, and best of all you're not ruining any sense of drama by knowing there's no way in hell anything can happen to any of the main cast.

Joel, your major spoiler question re 25 year gap.

Nero calculated distance of Spock from black hole, figured that at that distance there would be temporal distortion that meant it was going to take 25 years for Spock to arrive. Old Spock says something like that when, iirc, talking to Kirk.

btw I had not gone to one of these big, non-cheapie cinemas since I saw Revenge of the Sith. I was in shock that Hoyts charged 17.00 for the ticket!!

It was well worth it though :)

I'm still not quite sure why Spock sent him there rather than just threw him in the brig. Have we ever seen any Starfleet captain in any version of Trek jettison an insubordinate officer, rather than throw them in the brig?

Well, this particular officer was an effective stowaway who wasn't meant to be there in the first place, so there's a kind of sense to it...

It the same sense that goes with given Kirk a captaincy one week out of the Academy. Screw having to work and earn your way through the ranks.

Captaincy of the flagship, no less. About the same sense as Pike naming him first officer, then Spock booting him off the ship, then Kirk somehow taking command after that. It really is a quite ridiculous film when you actually sit back and think about it. No wonder it moves at such a fast pace to try and prevent such things.
