IT'S OFFICIAL - STAR TREK OPENS IN AUSTRALIA!!!!

It's 8:48 on Thursday 7/5/09, here in Perth, which means it's almost 11:00am on the East coast and being temporally at the "front" of the world, I can officially declare that "Star Trek" has opened on screens across the country.

Movies traditionally open on Thursdays here in Australia, which means that we get the film when it's still Wednesday afternoon in LA. That's a long way from the November 17th premiere of ROTJ in 1983 - almost SIX MONTHS after its US opening.

Anyway - REJOICE AUSSIES - WE GOT IT FIRST!!!!!!

P.S. I won't be going until next Tuesday, but that's fine!

*Gets out and pushes Earth around quicker*

:klingon:

Am not seeing it till 12th, a B/Day treat

Not seeing it til ...next Tuesday! (Oh the irony) My mum wants to see it with me on the cheap Tuesday tickets.

I really hope this film does well. Especially here in Oz. Trek movies have never particularly gone over well with Aussies. I may see this one more than once.

Actually you're second.

It opened in New Zealand at 11.59pm, Wednesday night.

My friend went to the first screening and loved it. I'm seeing it in about 5 hours time.

Actually - I was going to address that by saying "OZ/NZ GOT IT FIRST!!!!" but it felt a bit clunky. All I wanted to get across was that we got it BEFORE the Yanks!!! ;)

Trust me, after our recent trip to NZ and falling in love with that country, I am now that person that berates Aussies when they invariably make fun of the little cousin across the ocean. Your country is AMAZING and, quite frankly, shits all over Australia - especially that it's approaching middle May here in Perth and we are STILL getting 28 Fucking degrees!!!!!! I want some FUCKING AUTUMN ALREADY!!!!!! In comparison, in late summer on Mt Ruapehu, we got sleet coming horizontally into our faces - that was INCREDIBLE!!!!

Who HATES summer

Going for my second viewing tonight (1st was the world premiere) in a regular theatre. I'm going to IMAX Saturday as well as it's definitely an IMAX type of film.

Did you reach Dunedin?

Did you reach Dunedin?

Yep.

Our tour finished in Queenstown and then we got a hire car and drove east to Dunedin where we stayed at Larnach Castle. We had dinner there(only for castle guests)and left the next morning to drive up to Christchurch.

The morning we left Dunedin there was a MASSIVE blanket of fog over the entire town and the bay. From our vantage point, up on the peninsula in the castle, all we could see was the peaks of the mountains sticking out.

It was really quite magical!

I will say it again - NZ is an INCREDIBLE place and you are VERY lucky to live there!

Already seen it - it opened at 12.05am at IMAX in Melbourne.

I was there too :bolian:

loved it :)

(a few nit-picks - especially about warping from the ice planet back onto the Enterprise)

I can deal with alternate universe and I'm excited to see where these newer versions of the characters "boldly go" to

Yeah, I started a thread on that beaming to the Enterprise. Still don't get it.

I loved the home-made Enterprise uniforms on a few people at IMAX.

This thing that bugged me the most was like: Okay, first Spock abandons Kirk on some ice planet that is close enough to Vulcan to see it hanging in the sky like the moon... that bugged me. But then he randomly runs into Spock there? That SUPER bugged me! What are the odds they would be dumped in the same spot on this odd planet, and that that spot would be with 14km of a starfleet outpost?

Stretched credulity if you ask me.

I'm going to the first showing at my local cinema in a few hours. Plan on seeing again this weekend if I like it. Interestingly, my niece who has never shown any interest in Star Trek is going with me this weekend... Hopefully she'll enjoy it.

I saw it this morning at the 10:10am showing and loved it! I admit I was not really enthused about this at all until I saw a preview (in Watchmen, I think?). Suffice to say, it was great and I shall see it again soon! :)

I saw the 10:30am showing (the first) at Hoyts in Ringwood this morning. My Trekkiest kid got a day off school to watch it with me (he pronounced it "the best movie he has ever seen").

I LOVED IT. My biggest fear was not about canon, it was about it being 3/4 action with some plot to hold it together and that was in NO WAY the case.

Afterwards we went in search of byproducts.. no t-shirts in the entire shopping center. We eventually found some action figures and I did buy a young McCoy. He is sitting next to my AA McCoy now. There were only a few available. Of course no novelisation.

This is definitely rewatchable and I'll be seeing it Sat night if I can again.
