It's official: Jackson to direct the Hobbit

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

Thranduil, King of Mirkwood, has a somewhat prominent role in The Hobbit. I also wouldn't be surprised if they got Orlando Bloom to cameo as Legolas, Thranduil's son.

And the Dwarves did take a stand against Sauron, it's just their part in the war happened away from the Fellowship's notice. They and the Men of Dale fought against Sauron's forces in the north at the Lonely Mountain, while the Elves of Mirkwood and Lothlorien fought another army in southern Mirkwood.

Yet another single sex story, like the Lord of the Rings.

In case you're not aware, the Liv Tyler bit was put in so LOTR wouldn't be wall to wall men with one shieldmaiden who cross-dressed. Oh and a walk-on part for a mad elf queen.

True enough. That's what The Hobbit is. PJ is trying to make as faithful an adaptation as possible, so it'll be a male-dominated film. He may try to offset that slightly by the addition of the "extra archive" material being used to pad The Hobbit into two films -- namely the possibility of including the prominence of Galadriel with the Council of White confrontation with the Necromancer.

But that won't change the fundamental male-dominated nature of the story, nor does it alter the validity of your criticism.

What about that Reservoir Dogs, that Wild Bunch, that Magnificent Seven, that Dirty Dozen, Treaure of the Sierra Madre ... All male dominated, eh? All crap, right?

Er, no.

Who said anything about crap?

However I can guarantee you will never find another series of 5 (it seems to be confirmed) feature films based on stories with almost no women, despite the fact these films inhabit a fully functioning world with more history and culture than you can shake a stick at.

The Hobbit is a bedtime story for Tolkien's children. It's got dragons, giants, dwarfs, elves and sorcerers, and little people (children to human eyes) changing the world. It's not a tale about emancipation.

It doesn't matter how much you wriggle. It's fair comment.

It's a comment that ignores the entire concept of the story.

Why no gay people? Those are also fairly underrepresented in these 5 movies. Such a shame!

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

We're talking about an entire gender. This is one you can't duck. It's been written about at length by far more learned heads than mine.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

^ Then they ought to have better things to do with their learnin'.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

That's book learnin' for ya. No damn use to anyone.

Re: The Hobbit OFFICIALLY greenlit, Jackson to direct and in 3D

Do you want Jackson to rewrite the script to include women that weren't part of the book?
