It's official: Jackson to direct the Hobbit

Re: The Hobbit looks set to move to Europe...

he Hobbit may be much, much shorter than LotR but it's still a substantial narrative once you translate it into film. The dilemma is that while there's a bit too much for one film, there's not quite enough for two, hence the idea to somehow incorporate the white council thread in some way.
It's the idea of seeing this type of background material that makes me okay with splitting it in two. Even without reading the appendices of TLOTR, you have to wonder what Gandalf is off doing while Bilbo and the dwarves are mucking about.
Kicking back and having an ale at the Prancing Pony.

Re: The Hobbit looks set to move to Europe...

As I said in another thread. I think it should be moved to British Columbia. Scenery that cant be beat.

Did you even watch the LOTR films? New Zealand DID beat BC. :D

(I went to BC in 2007 and it is a stunning place)

Re: The Hobbit looks set to move to Europe...

And I went to NZ in 2009 and it is just INCREDIBLE.

Were there jobs there my partner and I would have been living there a year ago!

Re: The Hobbit looks set to move to Europe...

I doubt PJ would want to film here anyway, based on the fact that it was an Aussie union that started all this shit.

Re: The Hobbit looks set to move to Europe...

3-D?! Ugh. Enough of this bloated rubbish.

Re: The Hobbit looks set to move to Europe...

^Completely agreed. I hate 3d, it gives me a splitting headache within minutes and adds nothing of legitimate value. I assume it'll be available on normal screens, but we'll be stuck with a bunch of absurd, artless framing and unnecessarily foregrounded crap.

Of course, it looks like the money isn't actually there yet, so maybe this will be put off another year and people will have wised up on this ridiculous trend.

Hopefully now that he's confirmed as director this can finally get going! I'm wondering what the script status is since I believe the last thing Peter stated was that it was still being written by him, Fran, and Philippa. Interesting that I guess he'll be following "The Lovely Bones" with "The Hobbit Part I".

I honestly can't think of a better person to Direct these movies than Jackson. His work on LOTR was a labor of love. I guess it's hard for him to get back into these movies after ending on such a high with LOTR and spending so many years on it. All the best to him.

Sounds good to me. And apparently they're filming it in 3-D -- surprise, surprise. ;)

Any word on where it will be filmed? I think it would be great if they could use New Zealand again, although with all this union stuff that's been going on, it looks like that might not happen.

they NEED to do it in NZ
for crying out loud Hobbiton is still standing (sort of) and it's such an iconic little hobbit village that if they don't go back to that location, then it just won't feel right . . .
