Spoilers It seems that Data's backstory might be retconned back to the original version...

I think part of it is because of what we've seen in next weeks episode trailer.
It seems fairly safe to say that Capalius (Sp?) didn't just pop up over night or even within the last 20 years of the story.
Data-like Androids have apparently been existing there for a very long time.
One house and couple of satellites is the proof for an ancient civilisation? Seems like a stretch.

Rather, the parties doing such narrating on screen have been outright villains or folks being misled...

If we consistently have to rely on the "unreliable narrator" card, then the stories aren't very well constructed. What is the point of even following a universe if all it is, is a string of unreliable narrators? If Data says he was created by Noonien Soong, Lore says he was created by Noonien Soong, Tainer says she was created by Noonien Soong, everyone recognizes the advances he made in positronics, there's a bit of a let down when thirty years after the fact, new writers go "just kidding!" none of it happened that way. Why should I even care?

If what they are doing is so brilliant, they should be able to attach it to brand new creations instead of simply upending the apple cart of the last several decades. But, that seems to be all they have, upending the apple cart. They really don't seem to be bringing anything new to the table, just adding generic pathos to every legacy character they use.

Remember that Soong initially failed to create a stable positronic brain and left Earth before eventually ending up settling on Omicron Theta and creating his two prototypes, B-4, Lore, and Data around the 2330s.

If They are adding to his history, it is not a "rewrite".
There are a lot of unanswered question about both Data & Soong.

What we may have 'assumed' through the years being changed, is not a rewrite.

How many questions? How many people in the audience truly cared?

Doctor Who's done by and large the same "storytelling by numbers" shtick as well. Even more sloppily. About questions that were never asked, nor an issue, nor of any dramatic weight. (Which isn't to say Ruth Doctor isn't cool, she's exponentially superior but before I digress...)

It's also another example of "small universe syndrome" (aka "SUS"), which is like "jumping the shark" - being out of creative ideas except small universe looks inward instead of doing incredibly outlandish things outward that snap suspension of disbelief. The fanbase that exists may or may not relish what's being done in its name at that point. Not unlike how Futurama ended up for its last year or so... or any other show... Doctor Who in the 1980s did it as well. Arguably during Moffat's run too. in other words, "in general", that is, since people can and will find SUS entertaining regardless of show that inevitably goes down this path. I recognized it in Futurama but still liked it for the most part, though there were nitpicks, especially with name pronunciation being wrong for a couple things but I digress again: Individual experiences/preferences prevailing, YMMV.

My only issue is with Data's image in a supposedly 200,000 year old vision. If it's not meant to be interpreted literally then wtf?

That reminds me, of one of the few YT channels that still feels semi-evenhanded, he mentioned a missed opportunity with the alien from "The Last Outpost" and the ability to move stars and something about 600,000 years. He's right, that would have been a neat tie-in (SUS prevailing but SUS in of itself is neither good nor bad, how it's used (or not) usually makes it all fall into place neatly or makes it a mess.)

It is just an allusion. It is not literal.
Yeah, whole life is an illusion. Blah blah blah. So maybe those planets exploding also is not meant to be taken seriously?
Also, isn't it supposed to be a recording of sort of what already happened? Why then is it not meant to be literal?

Allusion, not illusion! It was nearly subliminally short flash to connect the thing emotionally to Data for the viewers.

We have no context for the images, plus it may not have been meant for organics at all.

Its supposed to be a record of what happened a very long time ago, attempting to warn future races about what happened and how to avoid it.

Either the Zhat Vash misunderstood a message that was not truly meant for them or they are correct and its already too late, we may not find out who the big bad is until next season.

To be fair, we have no idea how the recording device worked. For all we know, if it projects visions into your skull it might even be telepathic to some degree, using the viewer's own knowledge and imagination to drive the point home... they might have simply seen Data because they've associated synthetic life with the most high-profile android currently known.

But then again, I still think the android morphing into Data is a sign that Dr. Soong used the ancient androids as a template for his creations.

Yeah it cant be a coincidence.

The device is incredibly alien but could be somewhat sentient and attempting to translate events, which would explain the hit and miss results for the candidates.

Its possible that context and important details are being lost in the translation.

The whole warning system as designed doesn't make sense. If it makes the first person who uses it go crazy and jump off a cliff, everyone else will avoid it and no one would be warned.

The images in the vision flashed by so quickly (and I was half-paying attention while eating chips) that I didn't even notice that Data's face was in it.

Then why even come in? No one forced you to click on it. :p
Because I didn't want to assume my first impression had any chance at validity until I actually read the thread?

I know, right?

I'm probably gonna catch hell for this, but fuck it... at this point I just go: "what would DSC do here" and then think "PIC will probably do the opposite". It's worked out pretty well so far (not perfectly, mind you.) Take from that what you will.
