It seems as if Urban "Gets It"

After reading the latest Karl Urban Star Trek Magazine interview on trekmovie.com (link below), I am convinced that Urban gets what it means to be in a Star Trek film, gets what it means to play McCoy, and downright "Gets" McCoy's character.

Hopefully Pine and Quinto have also figured out as much as Urban has.

***Link-um***

That does sound positive. He "gets" McCoy. He also "gets" De too. I think Kelley was also one of the rare gentlemen actors. I've never heard a bad word said about him. It was rather sad/touching to read how Urban wished he could have sat down with De over a cup of coffee.

From the first time I heard Urban's name tossed out, I "saw it." (Kinda like how Temis "saw" Spock in Quinto... before anyone else really did!) The parallels are closer than most folks realize.

Urban's career, so far, is actually pretty similar to what Kelley's was... all Urban really needs to do is get a job as a crusading lawyer and he'll be there! ;)

His "Kiwi" accent isn't as strong as you might expect... it's actually pretty Socal-ized. And I'm sure that he can do a good Georgia accent... especially with the voice coach he's using.

He and Quinto are PERFECT cast choices. I'm still holding out a bit of reservation about Pine... but I think he has the potential to pull it off. As for the supporting cast, I'm less convinced (Yelchin is my least favorite, in fact... since he doesn't even SLIGHTLY resemble Koenig... though I'm sure he's a fine actor). But I don't think any of them are going to be significant enough to the film to really make a whole lotta difference.

We'll see soon enough... though it's now "more than a year" again... (sigh)

... at least that's enough time to put the Enterprise back the way she's supposed to be! :D

Agreed. Unfortunately, we Kiwis are appalling when it comes to retaining our accent overseas. Americans can come here and still speak the same after ten years. Put a Kiwi in California? They'll be assimilated in six months. It's rather pathetic, really.

The only one I'm really :wtf: about is Pegg as Scotty.
I thought Pegg's role in Mission Impossible III was slightly Scotty-like. I could see him adapting that performace into something for this Star Trek film.

However, Scotty was never one of the "big three", and while his role was always bigger than the "other three" he is not as important as McCoy (although Scotty was always my personal favorite). I won't go as far to say that Pegg's performance won't matter, but in reality a weak performance by him won't break this film.

McCoy needs to be a big part of this film , IMO, and a strong performance by Urban will go a long way to making this film work. I think he is definitely up to the task.

I can see Urban as possibly putting in the the strongest performance among the big three, with Quinto in a close second.

Oh man... I am so looking forward to this film. :D

Too bad it's still more than a year a way. :(

Resistance ... is futile.

I'm glad Urban understands Bones and De. More than any other character in Star Trek, Bones was De Kelley. His personality, gestures, drawl, all De, and a classic gentleman character. They've been saying that the new performances are the actor's own takes with a strong grounding in the original portrayls, but in the case of Bones I actually hope Urban plays De playing Bones. That's what De always did and it always worked. Bones was by far the most human character.

Looks like Karl Urban may be the Roberto Orci of the cast, as it were. This was the one casting decision I found most perplexing as the role I knew Urban for - Eomer - did not resemble Bones in the slightest, but this interview proves he knows how to talk about the character. Which is certainly a good sign, as it implies he knows how to act him, too. :)

Kegek, I'm with you on this one. I knew Urban from a handful of other roles - Eomer (LOTR), Lord Vaako (The Chronicles of Riddick) and Kirill (The Bourne Supremacy. None of them led me to connect him with a role like that of Leonard McCoy, regardless of the character's age. I just couldn't see it. But... after reading that interview I do feel that he stands more than a decent chance of pulling it off. He has drawn a bead on the character, in that he seems to understand him and his place in the Trekverse very well.

I hear that. Well said.

He certainly does seem to have enough respect for the character to do a believable job as McCoy.

...and you're right Kegak. Urban should be made one of the "Ofiicial Spokesman" of this film, such as the way Orci seems to be.
