It really is interesting to see an episode of "Fantasy Island".

So I remember an interview with Ricardo Montablan that he wasn't going to reprise Khan at first because when he practiced the role he thought he just sounded like a sci-fi version of his character, Mr. Rourke, on the show and the audience wouldn't take him seriously and would just laugh at him. Keep in mind Fantasy Island was one of the most popular shows at the time TWOK came out.

I was familiar with the show and his character from my youth but hadn't actually watched an episode in decades.

Well recently one of the 5,000 channels I seem to get started running episodes of Fantasy Island. And I can totally understand now why Montablan was so worried.

I knew the general character he played, but didn't realize the specifics of him. Of course he wore the pristine white suit and was immacuately quaffed, but I didn't fully remember his character's personality. He really was the polar opposite of Khan, he was always in control, spoke very calmly and evenly all the time. He never got really emotional whether it be a good or a bad reason and he was very logical and methodical in how he handled things. In fact his character was actually very similar to Spock in his actions and thoughts.

Yet now he has to play this obsessed Moby Dick quoting madman who has almost no control over his emotions and goes bezerk at times. Even in Space Seed he didn't act like this, he was much more like Mr. Rourke than what Khan became. Yeah I think if he'd been a weak actor he might have been unable to breakout of the role he was known for and convince people he was this totally different character and not Ricardo Montablan pretending to be a madman when we knew what he was really like as a character.

So he said he practiced a lot and of course he pulled it off brilliantly to where when people saw TWOK they were "Man Khan was a crazy badass" and not just "Well seeing Mr. Rourke act crazy was amusing."

I often roll my eyes at method actors or actors who have to really research and become their role as just self indulgent over importance on what they do, because it is just pretending to be someone else after all and many great actors can do it without having to "become" the person.

It is impressive though when you see a really good actor be able to pull off such diametrically opposite roles, and be able to do it when both characters are popular at the same time.

Well done Ricardo.

It's a shame he wasn't in more movies, villain or otherwise, the guy was clearly a good actor.

Indeed. I think he had done quite a few movies in the earlier 60's..the "Latin Lover" roles he has talked about. But ya would have been great to see him in more, post TWOK.

Speaking of Fantasy Island, I was watching some a few years back and who walks out of the plane at the beginning but a VERY YOUNG Jonathan Frakes! I think it was his first TV gig.

appeared in many films early in his career, some well known such as Battlefield, Sayonara, Cheyenne Autumn, the Money Trap, the Singing Nun, and Escape from (and Conquest of) the Planet of the Apes. Never a star, but he was almost always working.

Made an easy transition to television and proved astoundingly popular, with numerous guest appearances every year until FI (of course with the occasional film). Now seems to be getting a lot of work as a voice actor.

I'd encourage anyone interested in listening to Mr. Montalban discuss his career to watch his interview on the Archive of American Television's website.

Yeah Fantasy Island literally had hundreds of guest actors over it's run. There's a site somewhere that lists them all, some were already pretty well known, but there are quite a few that were just some unknown at the time but became famous later on for something else.

More Montalban:

There's a fun old crime drama, "Mystery Street," that shows up on TCM periodically. (I think it's on again later this month.) Montalban plays a detective who teams up with a scientist to solve crimes. It's kind of a black-and-white proto-CSI.

He also sings, dances, and swims in an old Esther Williams aqua-musical. And you know that old holiday standard, "Baby, It's Cold Outside"? Guess who first sang that song onscreen? Yep, Montalban.

And, of course, he was the suave, rather likable villain in the very first WONDER WOMAN tv-movie, the one with Cathy Lee Crosby. And I recently saw him playing another charming villain in an old "Man from UNCLE" episode . . .

Ricardo made a pretty good bad guy in an early episode of Mission: Impossible as I remember, though I've only seen it once or twice, in "Snowball In Hell".

...and let us not forget Armondo from 2 Planet of the Apes films

I haven't checked Montalban's IMDB credits, but I think one of his last roles was as a wheelchair-bound relative - due to the actor's actual declining health - in one of Robert Rodriguez's "Spy Kids" films.

I thought he was in all the Spy Kids movies (up until his death).

Edit: I guess he was in the second and third film.

He was in the wheel chair because he was paralyzed, wasn't he?

^^

From my understanding, it was an injury that he received on a film set all the way back in 1951. An injury that just built up over time and got worse as he aged, eventually paralyzing him below the waist.

:(

An interesting thing I noticed, watching Fantasy Island from the beginning. The early episodes show a darker plot to them, unlike the happy Ha ha ha stuff about love and money that came later. But also, we see a much darker Roarke with flashes of mean and malevolent, almost. He uses that half-squint glittery-eyes thing he does. I never noticed when it originally aired, but watching in order, now, it is very apparent to me. OP or others notice this?

I loved Ricardo Montalban.

So smooth, so classy. Nick Meyer was right: Montalban spoke beautifully.

I loved the way he spoke.

I always admired him tremendously.

I believe the newer Fantasy Island with Malcolm McDowell played on the darker riff as well.
