IT people got utes

Hello fellow IT people.

I like coming to the forums to get news ideas for how to do admin work on pc's. For example, it's because of this forum that I was introduced to the NoScripts addon for Firefox. Boy does that work well.

Then in Brobers thread another utility was mentioned that seemed great, but I have never heard about it. So maybe we can pool our utes to keep the evil end-users at bay.

For Internet security I like the NoScripts, works very well. Does IE have something like that? Something like running IE in no-addons mode?

For startup errors and virus protection I like Autoruns and HiJackthis. Autoruns is part of the Sysinternals from Mark Russianov. I probably butchered the spelling of his name, but that utility works great for identifing startup apps and other services. HiJackThis is very similar. I like to use them both.

I also like xp-antispy. That is close to the other ones, but has a few more options.

Pagedfrg is a page file defragmenter, part of the Systernals package as well.

So what are some of the good utes out there?

I read this thread title as "If people got UTIs" :shifty:

Anyway, I used to swear by Process Monitor (lets you pause/kill/change the priority of processes, look at the libraries, sockets and files they're using etc), Process Explorer (shows registry/file/process activity in real-time), SDelete (overwrites and deletes files so they can't be recovered), and Junction (creates symbolic links). All of them are available from Sysinternals. Of course now I'm on Linux and I can do most of these things with GNU tools.

Keeping end users at bay is easy. Give them diskless thin clients that they can use to access desktops provisioned from virtual machine images on a centrally controlled server.

WinDirStat. Uses a treemap to show what's using your disk space. Awesome!

I also use Easy Duplicate Finder, which is free, and can find duplicate files in any folders you specify. Useful for people like me who copy things into various locations and then forget...

TrueCrypt is my one-stop shop for encryption.

I swear by PuTTY for SSH/telnet. If I need VT220 emulation, I use IVT.

NetLimiter Monitor is pretty cool, if you want to know what's using your bandwidth.

Daemon Tools Lite for mounting ISO images.

I think that's about all I've got that isn't too purpose-specific.
