When you put yourself out there in an open forum with your opinions, expect scrutiny based on your comments.
Scrutiny, yes. Ridicule, no. ;)

And the irony of this is that you've extrapolated all of this about me because I suggested that our friend here is spending a little too much time on such an endeavor.
No, you didn't only suggested something. You purported to know what he should do.

Don't you think it's just a tad hypocritical to scold me for doing the exactly what you accuse me of?
I did not accuse you of anything. I just described what you did.

Who the fuck asked you? Why are you offended? The comments weren't directed at you.
 This:
The simple fact that I have an account here gives me the right, rookie.

I don't know why you're choosing to get in to a pissing match with me but it's really not necessary and kind of odd for such a new member.
I don't want any pissing match. I just point out where I see something wrong.

And who's a new member?

If Star Trek forums don't drive you to drink I don't know what will.

Thanks!

I think that kid either needs elocution lessons.

Child actors have usually had lots of elocution, but he's acting. Acting the part of a rebel kid who just wrecked his uncle's car and almost went off a precipice. A few breathlessly dropped syllables would seem normal in this situation.

It wasn't wrong... grow the fuck up. The "cadet" below your name had me thinking that you were new. My bad.

Okay, enough. Siberius/Tiberius. Audio spectrum analysis software. Discuss those. Not each other.

Judge for yourself [CAUTION: the sound file may make you want to blow up your car] I also looked at the file in audacity, the s sounds that the kid makes are nearly flat while the t in tiberius is much larger.
I hear the 'T' in Tiberius every time.

** I just hope the poor kid never sees this thread. He's probably a great kid with a good career ahead of him. This thread would traumatize him. **

The very first time I heard the trailer I really thought I did hear an "S", but subsequent listens I heard the "T" with no problem. The T is slurred a bit as he runs his first and middle names together rather fast, but it's definitely there. I think some people heard it with the "S" first time like I did though, but instead they made up their minds that the first way they heard it was correct, and so when they listen to it again, they hear want they want to hear rather than what was actually there. When I misheard it the first time, I assumed I must have heard it wrong, so listened more carefully the next time and picked it up with no issues the second time.

Wow, the things we can accomplish with science nowdays. Now if we could just get rid of all those pesky diseases we've been dying of for thousands of years...Right after we develop tv's that allow you to zoom in on the actor's face at a molecular level!:techman:

To be used, no doubt in the most exhaustive exploration yet of Shatner's TOS hairpiece. :)

Or better yet, to find the missing GREEN molecules in the command tunics. :techman:

I have watched the trailers many, many times on hi-fi equipment and you can argue all you like but he definitely says Siberius, not Tiberius.

This has been gnawing away at me for months when I was in bed and I finally decided to do something about it.

To get final proof I used software which can analyse sounds and finally confirm what I am hearing is Siberius not Tiberius.

I also used wavepad which can show the waveform.I isolated the first part of the sound and compared with the S sound I speak and other generic S's.

Comparison of general phonetic S sounds with the first part of the word will confirm.

I think that kid either needs elocution lessons or someone mistyped his script using an S instead of a T.

I would also ask someone else to confirm the results I got using their own software.

It's called a Q-Tip, bro...

Cop: What is your name?

Jimmy: I'm James Siberius Kirk!

Cop: Surely, you can't be Siberius.

Jimmy: I am Siberius -- and don't call me Shirley.

I don't know, it sounds like "Fiberious' to me anyone else?
♫♪
Tiberius, Tiberius, bo-berius,
Banana-fana Fiberius
Fee-fi-mo-merius
Tiberius!

Obvious troll is obvious.

Its really easy to get the kid say Siberius - all you have to do is make him same Jame instead of James. So go listen again, and think, as he says it, Jame Siberius Kirk. Easy as cake.

Now, go back, and think, James, and magically, you'll here a T on the beginning of the next word. Piece of Pie.

The reason you can hear him say two different things is this: The division between spoken words is something that only exists in your head. It is your brain that divides the sounds up in sensible ways. The kid says JAMESTIBERIUSKIRK and you chop it up where it makes sense to you. Hopefully, your chops and his chops will coincide, but frankly we have no way of knowing.
Secondly, the T and S sounds are very similar - one is a voiceless alveolar fricative and one is a voiceless alveolar plosive. That means that your tongue is in about the same position when you say both t and s; in one case you let the air pass over it and in the other you interrupt the flow abruptly, making a sharper sound.

Second experiment:
Make a T sound. Short, like time. Tih, right? Make it a bunch of times.

Now, make a T sound, but after the hard hit keep the air flowing over your tongue. Try it a bunch of times. Notice how it becomes, after that sharp hit, very much like the hissing S sound? That is because it is. Tsssssss, right?

See how the two sounds are related?

Conclusions:
When you hear him say Siberious, you really are hearing the word Siberious, because your brain has chosen to devide his words in a way that causes the S and the T sound to slurr together. (Remember, this is unlike when we actually us and ST sound). Since the two sounds are very similar, the T sound, which is the same sound as the S sound only very short, becomes attached to that S sound and disappears. Since you are not him, and you are in his head, For all practical purposes he does say Siberious, but that is you, not him.
But, we have to assume that he said James, because A. That is his name, B. That is a name, and C. because it doesn't make any sense for him not to. And if the child says James, we will probably hear that sound, T, and the beginning of his second name.

(You may note that I am referring to S as a Voiced alveolar fricative when it is in infact voiceless. I am aware - James actually ends with the Z sound, which is the Voiced Alveolar Fricative, but I thought that having that many Z's, S's and T's floating around would be overly confusing. So yes, It is the Z sound and the T sound that are so close in this case, but when you do the experiment to you will turn the T sound into an voiceless S, which is still very close to Z, and besides, when I listen to the video I think he uses S instead of Z on the end of james- he really sort of hisses it)

^This whole thing is giving me a Fricative headache.:guffaw:
Actually my interest is linguistics so I found it very interesting. Dialects and accents have always fascinated me, because of a talent of mine. I can talk to someone for only a couple of minutes and (unconsciously) pick up their accent.

Please don't do that any more.
