IT "facebook"

Hey there. I've been wondering about an old schoolmate of mine (I started a thread about him a couple of years back). There are times when I really want to know what became of him.

There's no sign of him on Facebook (he was one of those kids who played with computers at home frequently before Windows 3.1 came out). I'm starting to wonder if he might be inclined to sign up in some kind of ITequese message board or social networking (a more geeky version of Facebook). I might be outreaching here, but I'm just wondering.

He was a nifty kid. He's capable of having several Ph.Ds by now (though chances are he doesn't even have an graduate degree).

I'm gonna post this in the Science and Technology forum as well since there might be posters who don't visit the Misc.

If he's the IT type, it's quite possible that he is set to 'non searchable' on Facebook, and may be there but you can't see him.

I have a friend from high school, very bright (1600 SAT on the old scale). I found out his government job doesn't permit him to have a Facebook account due to security regulations.

^True. However, one of his old friends (he had only two true friends) from high school used to be facebook friends with me. She told me he struggled to figure what he wanted to be before they lost touch). Hopefully, that's not the case.

Maybe he's like me, and thought FB was cool back in 2005, but quickly grew tired of the constant FB worship and jumped ship. :)

Have you checked with the school? It's amazing how the reunion committees are able to keep track of former students. They might have a current address/phone number for him.

^Nah, they couldn't even find my class president, and he's the principal of a large school for the deaf.

If you wanted to bring up the possibility that perhaps the guy just isn't on Facebook, you could have said that in a less derogatory way. Not like it's even a necessary point to bring up, seeing as how that's extremely obvious that someone you can't find on Facebook might not be on Facebook.

I'm not a huge Facebook fan by any means, but I'm really sick of all of the crap people feel they have to post any time Facebook is even mentioned. Cue the "Twitter is worthless" and "Conformity is stupid" statements while we're at it.

Are you guys still using a message board to communicate with each other? And one centered around Star Trek, at that? How 2000 of you!

:p

I'm currently starting a fire to send smoke signals. Finn, be on the lookout, I'll send out the signal if your friend replies to my signals. ;)

:)

I remember how back when Japan had that earthquake in 1994 or 1995, we were planning a fundraising to help the deaf community over there. He had two questions for all of us. He asked how we could do it when we "didn't know" anybody over there (the club president has family in Japan-his father was originally from Japan, a fact not exactly obscure in the school seeing how the father was a teacher at the school as well), and how we could overcome the fact Japan uses a different currency than US.

This is the kid who read legal papers and dictionaries while in grade school.

I don't know what he'd be like at 30 when he was pretty sheltered at 15.

You could always try Myspace. Not a lot of people are on it now, but it would be worth a shot. I don't think you have to log in to do that.

Can't you Google his name with a few keywords to see if you can find out where he might be, it'd likely cover all the major social network sites?
